INTRODUCTION
This experiment is conducted to show selective permeability of a potatoes. This
experiment is to prove two different types of osmosis, the hypotonic solution and the
hypertonic solution. Osmosis happens when a water molecules diffuse by moving across a
semipermeable membrane from an area of a higher water concentration to an area of a
lower water concentration. There are three types of osmosis, but in this case of experiment
we are proving to types of Osmosis. Hypotonic solution happens when it has fewer solutes
than a cell and a high concentration of water around the cell this means more water are
entering the cell in a hypotonic solution, causing a cell to expand or even burst. While a
hypertonic solution has more solutes than a cell and a lower concentration of water around
the cell, this means more water are exiting the cell in hypertonic solution, causing a cell to
shrink, shrivel and even die.
This experiment is about experimenting two potatoes in two different type of water,
one in a fresh water and the other one is in a salt water, afterward the potatoes will be
observe. We measured the potatoes and the water by their condition after the experiment,
we measured it by their appearance, texture and measurement. The hypothesis from the
experiment is the potato in the fresh water will become bigger in appearance but the
volume of water that is used for the experiment will remain the same just like before, the
changes only happens in the potato. While in the salt water, the potato will become smaller
than before because the cell shrink and shrivel, and the volume of the salt water will
decrease.
PROCEDURE
Material:
A Ruler
Knife
2 Graduated cylinder
1 Scale
Procedure:
1. Prepare all of the materials.
2. First, cut the potato into 2 1/4, and weigh them in the scale to know their mass.
3. Then, measure the original potatoes with a ruler before the experiment.
4. Pour 250 ml of water into each of the beaker.
5. Next, pour 4 teaspoon of salt into one of the beaker, and stir the salt until it dissolve
into the water.
6. When both beaker are ready to set, put each one of the potatoes into each beaker.
Remember 1 beaker 1 potato!
7. Set aside and wait for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
8. After that, take out the potato and observe both the potato and the water condition
after the experiment.
9. Record the findings on the data table.

RESULTS
Based on the observation result recorded in the data table, the explanation and
interpretation will be elaborated. Before the experiment is conducted, both of the potato is
round, juicy and proportional just like a normal potato. The mass of the potato is 3 g and
the width is 4.5 cm, the water that is used for the experiment is 250 ml. After the
experiment the potato in the fresh water becomes more harder than before, and the color
becomes lighter. While the potato in the salt water is more softer than before, the texture is
more tender, and the color becomes more darker than before.
After the experiment, the mass and width of the potato in the fresh water remain
the same like before, while the potato in the salt water decrease in width from 4.5 cm into
4 cm but the mass of the potato remain the same. Then, the volume of fresh water after
the experiment still remain the same like before, while the volume of salt water after the
experiment decrease by 1 ml into 149 ml. From the result of observation, the hypothesis is
50:50 right. The prediction of the salt water is right because the potato becomes smaller
and the volume of salt water decreases because its a hypertonic solution. But the
prediction of the fresh water is wrong, because the size of the potato still remain the same
like before, it doesn't increase in size and the volume of water remain the same like before.
