LEARNING ACTIVITY NO. 1

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Read and comprehend the instructions carefully.
2. Write your answers on a clean sheet of paper.

I. Discus the importance of field crops to human, animal and Philippine economy.

Field crops play a crucial role to human, animal, and Philippine economy.
Cereals are examples of field crops that are staple foods and significant sources of
nutrients in both developed and developing nations. Cereals and cereal products are
a good source of energy, carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. They also contain a
variety of micronutrients that are essential to human health, like zinc, magnesium,
and some B vitamins, as well as vitamin E. Animal health is improved by field crops.
Forage crops are plant materials, either fresh or preserved, that are fed to animals.
An important factor in the Philippine economy is field crops. Crop productivity
increased by 5.0 percent. It contributed 53.7% of the total agricultural production.
Production increased by 15.4% for corn and 7.1 percent for palay (PSA, August
2020).

II. List down at least ten (10) field crops in your surroundings. Indicate its agronomic
classification and its scientific name.

III. Trace the volume and area of production of major field crops in the Philippines
from 2017-2021.

VOLUME AND AREA OF PRODUCTION OF MAJOR FIELD CROPS IN THE

PHILIPPINES

1. Palay

 Production for July-September 2016 at 2.97 million MT grew by 16.35

percent from the 2.55 million MT output in 2015. Harvest area
increased to 745.00 thousand hectares from last year’s level of 653.00
thousand hectares. Yield was higher at 3.98 MT per hectare from 3.91
MT per hectare last year. Increments in production were noted in
almost all regions except CAR, Central Visayas, Davao Region and
NIR.

2. Corn

 Corn output in July-September 2016 at 2.66 million MT was 10.61

percent higher than the 2.41 million MT record in 2015. Harvest area
expanded from 882 thousand hectares to 967 thousand hectares or by
9.61 percent. Yield per hectare stretched by 0.91 percent, from 2.73
MT to 2.75 MT.

3. Mungbean

 For the third quarter of 2017, production of mung bean reached 1.50
thousand metric tons which was 4.1 percent higher than the 1.44
thousand metric tons level in the same quarter of 2016. Cagayan
Valley was the top producer with 0.67 thousand metric ton contributing
45.1 percent to the country’s total output. Davao Region ranked second
with 10.6 percent followed by Caraga with 7.4 percent.

4. Peanut

 During the July-September 2017 period, production of peanut grew by

1.4 percent, from 3.65 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of the
previous yearto 3.71 thousand metric tons this year. Ilocos Region, the
lead producer with 0.46 thousand metric ton shared 12.5 percent to the
total production this quarter. This was followed by Northern Mindanao
with 12.4 percent and Cagayan Valley with 12.2 percent.
5. Sweet Potato

 During the July-September 2017 period, production of sweet potato

went up by 1.7 percent from 133.94 thousand metric tons in the same
quarter of 2016 to 136.25 thousand metric tons this year. The
improvement in output could be attributed to the following: o increased
area planted in Agusan del Sur due to adequate rainfall during planting
time; and bigger tubers harvested in Leyte due to sufficient soil
moisture. Eastern Visayas, the top producer of sweet potato with 49.95
thousand metric tons shared 36.7 percent to the country’s total
production. Bicol Region came next with 9.9 percent share and
CALABARZON with 8.2 percent.

6. Cassava

 The July-September 2017 production of cassava at 619.83 thousand

metric tons was 1.9 percent higher than the same quarter of the
previous year’s level of 608.07 thousand metric tons. ARMM registered
the highest production at 269.95 thousand metric tons sharing 43.6
percent to total cassava production this quarter. This was followed by
Northern Mindanao and Cagayan Valley with 15.9 percent and 15.3
percent shares, respectively.

IV. Trace the volume and area of production of major field crops in the Camiguin
Province from 2017-2021.

VOLUME AND AREA OF PRODUCTION OF MAJOR FIELD CROPS IN THE

CAMIGUIN PROVINCE FROM 2017-2021
