REVISION GUIDELINES
END OF YEAR EXAMINATIONS
2022/2023
YEAR 4

Dear Parents/Guardians,
By the grace of God, the Trinity term is fast drawing to a close. We wish to express
our appreciation for your cooperation throughout the term.

The end of year exams will be written from Monday 12th June to Friday 16th June 2023.
Attached are guidelines on all areas to be examined. The purpose for these guidelines
is to help in effective revision for the end of year examinations.
The subjects in which they will be examined are English, Math, Science, History,
Geography, and Information & Communication Technology.
Your child will be graded in only these subjects. Assessment will be done in the
following but the records will not be part of the subjects earlier mentioned - Art, Music
and Physical Education.
It is our hope that you will assist your child/ward to prepare for the end of year
examinations. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any problems.

MATHEMATICS

The mathematics paper for the academic year will be in three parts; Mental,
Mathematics Paper 1 and Mathematics Paper 2.

Mathematics Paper 1

This involves mechanical and calculation questions where children are required to
clearly show the procedure they used in arriving at their answers. However, there will
be a few questions where pupils are expected to give direct answers without showing
any procedure.

Mathematics Paper 2

This paper involves a lot more story/word problems and some calculation questions.
Children are expected to write appropriate statements when solving the word problems
and logically demonstrate how the answers are arrived at.

Children are expected to prepare by working on the following areas:

➢ Counting and sequences


➢ Integers, powers and roots
▪ Read and write number names and whole numbers greater than 1000 and
less than 0.
▪ Estimate, add and subtract whole numbers with up to three digits.
▪ Estimate and multiply whole numbers up to 1000 by 1-digit whole numbers.
▪ Estimate and divide whole numbers up to 100 by 1-digit whole numbers.
▪ Understand the relationship between multiples and factors.

➢ Place value, ordering and rounding


➢ Fractions, decimals, percentages
➢ Geometry and Measure-
▪ Time

▪ Geometrical reasoning, shapes and measurements
➢ Position and transformations
▪ Interpret and create descriptions of position, direction and movement,
including reference to cardinal and ordinal points, and their notations.
▪ Understand that position can be described using coordinate notation.
▪ Read and plot coordinates in the first quadrant (with the aid of a grid).
• Statistics and Probability

ENGLISH

The English Examination will comprise two papers. Paper 1 (Non-Fiction) and Paper 2
(Fiction). In each of the papers, learners will be examined in Reading (Comprehension),
Writing (Creative), Grammar and punctuation.
Reading
Both papers will have a Reading text and learners will be tested on how well they can
comprehend by answering a set of questions.
Grammar and Punctuation (built into the reading paper): Learners will be tested within
the text. Learners are to revise all grammar and punctuation topics; including the
following:
Word Classes
Nouns
Adjectives
Adverbs
Verbs
Prepositions
Connectives
Phrases/Clauses
Punctuation
Learners must revise punctuation marks. (Refer to English notebook)

Writing
Both papers require writing – One fiction task and one non-fiction task.
For any writing genre, learners are to apply the correct features.

Use of Figurative language, powerful words, punctuation, as well as interesting
vocabulary are to be used appropriately. Learners are to pay attention to spelling and
handwriting.

SCIENCE

The Science Exam has two main components: Paper I and Paper II. The exam will
cover all topics studied this academic year. Learners are encouraged to understand the
main scientific concepts taught in addition to a having a good grasp of Scientific
principles and facts. The following are some of the areas learners are likely to be
assessed in.

Biology

● The Human skeletal system
● The muscular system

● Food chains

Chemistry
● Materials and their structure
● States of matter
o Solids, liquids and gases
o Changes to materials
o Properties of materials

• Forces and energy
o Energy transfer
o Light energy
o Light energy and our Solar System
● Electricity
• Simple circuits
• Sources and uses of electricity
• Planet Earth
o Structure of the Earth

HISTORY

There will be two sections in the History examination.

Section A will require learners to answer questions by filling in the gap and providing
simple answers to questions using short sentences.

Section B will require a short explanation or statements about a picture, a word or


phrase.

Learners must revise the following topics:

• Ancient Egypt
• Ancient Greece
• Ancient Rome
• Ghana - The Republics, Missionary activities in Gold Coast,
Regions and their capitals

GEOGRAPHY

The paper will have multiple choice section and ‘fill in the blanks’. Pupils will also
supply short answers for some geographical terms. Pupils must revise the following
topics covered during the term and review the slides in the Google Classroom.

o Settlements-Sizes of settlements/ Types of settlements/ Settlement


patterns/ reasons for settlement location.
o Our Environment
o Ghana –regions and capitals/seasons/
o Leisure time
o Earthquakes
o Volcanoes
