 Lack of vehicle maintenance

 Untidy bus
 Fumes
 Breakdown
 Height restriction barriers
 Movement of vehicles
 Vehicle fire
 Unsettled student removes seatbelt and move around the minibus while it is
in motion.
 Unsettled Student may display challenging behaviours kicking, pushing and
hitting.
 Student attempts to get off of the bus while it is in motion.
 Driver of the bus is distracted or interfered with by student removing
seatbelt and displaying challenging behaviours
 Students on a 1:1 activity on their own in the rear of the minibus with only
the driver as their staff member and not constantly monitored.

Existing safety measures/controls:

Vehicle
 Regular checks are carried out on the minibus by the maintenance staff.
 The bus is serviced by competent contractors.
 The minibus is fitted with seat belts.
 Drivers report faults upon return to school, using a maintenance report
form.
 Exits must not be blocked
 The minibus is equipped with a first aid kit and fire extinguisher
 Minibuses are modified as necessary to ensure the safety of all occupants
 The minibus is registered with an emergency breakdown service.
 Before setting off, ensure there is enough fuel in the bus for the whole
journey.
 Drivers are aware of the height of their minibus.
 To ensure roadworthiness of the vehicle, drivers must check the vehicle
prior to use.
 Drivers must complete the vehicle log after every journey.
 The minibus is kept free of clutter and bags and other items are securely
stored when travelling.

Staff

 Drivers have to successfully complete a competence driving test before


being allowed to drive the minibus.
 Authorised drivers documents are reviewed annually, driving offences are
reported then suitability for driver status is assessed.
 Drivers undergo a medical to ensure they are fit to drive. This is repeated at
regular intervals
 Staff complete individual risk assessments for activities
 Staff going out on journeys has means of communication in the form of a
mobile phone.
 Drivers have been instructed not to use the mobile phone when driving.
 Staffs are aware of procedures to take in the event of an emergency or
accident
