RELIABILITY OF COMMUTER OMNIBUSES:

Driver Training Programs: To enhance the skills and professionalism of kombi drivers, it is essential to
implement comprehensive training programs. These programs should cover road safety, defensive
driving techniques, and customer service. By equipping drivers with these skills, we can ensure they
are better prepared to handle various driving situations safely and interact with the students
respectfully.

Complaint and Feedback System: Establishing a transparent complaint and feedback system is crucial
for addressing issues promptly. This system should allow undergraduate students to report problems
anonymously through multiple channels, such as mobile apps and hotlines. Ensuring accountability
and responsiveness will help build trust and improve the overall service quality.

Safety Measures: To enhance safety, it is important to mandate regular vehicle inspections and install
safety devices like GPS trackers, speed governors, and CCTV cameras. These measures will help
monitor driver behaviour, ensure compliance with safety standards, and provide a safer commuting
environment for students.

Driver Rating System: Introducing a passenger rating system can incentivize good behaviour and
professionalism among drivers. Passengers can rate their experiences, and drivers with high ratings
can receive rewards, while those with low ratings may face penalties. This system encourages drivers
to maintain high standards of service.

Code of Conduct: Establishing and enforcing a formal code of conduct for drivers is essential. This
code should cover aspects such as respectful communication, vehicle cleanliness, and adherence to
designated routes. Clear guidelines will help ensure that drivers maintain a professional demeanour
and provide a consistent service.

Fixed Timetables and Routes: Implementing fixed schedules and routes can significantly improve the
reliability of kombi services. This approach reduces the need for speeding and unauthorized detours,
ensuring that students can rely on timely and predictable transportation.

Collaboration with University Authorities: Regular meetings between kombi operators, university
officials, and student representatives are vital for addressing ongoing issues and ensuring compliance
with established standards. This collaboration fosters a cooperative environment where concerns can
be discussed and resolved effectively.

Incentives for Safe Driving: Offering rewards for drivers who consistently demonstrate
professionalism, and safety can motivate them to maintain high standards. Financial bonuses and
recognition awards can serve as incentives, encouraging drivers to prioritize safe and professional
conduct.

In conclusion, the research on the perceptions of undergraduate students at the University of

Zimbabwe regarding the professionalism, safety, and reliability of kombi drivers at the main campus
rank reveals several critical insights. The findings indicate a general concern among students about
the current standards of kombi services, highlighting issues such as inconsistent professionalism,
safety risks, and unreliable schedules. These concerns underscore the need for targeted
interventions, including enhanced driver training programs, robust complaint and feedback systems,
and the implementation of safety measures like regular vehicle inspections and technological
monitoring. Additionally, fostering collaboration between kombi operators, university authorities,
and student representatives is essential to address these issues effectively. By adopting these
recommendations, it is possible to significantly improve the overall quality of kombi services,
ensuring a safer and more reliable transportation experience for UZ students.

From the research conducted various RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE PROFESSIONALISM, SAFETY,

AND RELIABILITY OF COMMUTER OMNIBUSES has been suggested by students and here are some of
the recommendations
A-Professionalism
Periodic Driver Training Programs: To enhance the skills and professionalism of kombi drivers, it is
essential to implement comprehensive training programs. These programs should cover road safety,
defensive driving techniques, and customer service. By equipping drivers with these skills, we can
ensure they are better prepared to handle various driving situations safely and interact with students
respectively.

B.Safety
There is need for students to be supported with more staff that works as rank monitors as this will
help improve on kombi drivers code of conduct with students that their safety will be promoted as
these rank monitors will be operating being guided by various policies or regulations from the assert
protection service .
Another suggestion is the installation of CCTV cameras at the Rank as this will help stop issues of
drivers being harsh on students and driving while students are still boarding into the commuter
omnibus and these will also help in monitoring the speed at which the drivers will be driving when
transporting the students thus the high potential of accidents due to high speeding will be reduced
because drivers will be monitored by speed cameras that will be installed on the commuter
omnibus .

C.Reliability
The reliability of Kombi drivers or service can be prompted by introducing policies such as price
change policy where by students will be given changes about price change a week before such that
they will plan on budgeting their finances as this will also help in students attending all their lectures
without fear of being out of funds for those that will be driving to and from school as a results of
immediate change in price .
There is also need for an individual registration must policy not just for kombis but everyone that
works at the rank as this will help in promoting good working conduct and good service delivery as
these drivers will be known individually that can be traced in the event that they have failed to be
consistent and leading to a risk, this will also ensure that consistent performance is promoted as
drivers will be easily tracked and can be reported when they go out of their professional through the
provision of complaint desk or personnel at the rank
