Many animals have very sharp senses unlike human beings.

Q1. Write few facts about the following animals?

(a) Dog (b) Ant

Dog:

1. Dogs have very powerful sense of smell and hearing.


2. Thus dogs are used in security services to sniff and track people, criminals,
drugs.
3. They can also locate people buried in debris.

Ant:

1. Ants use their antennae to smell.


2. When an ant finds food, it leaves a chemical trail along the ground on its way
other ants soon follow this trail.
Q2. Why are dogs used in rescue operation?

Dogs have very powerful sense of smell. The sharp sense of smell dogs is
used in rescue operation.

Q3. How do Eagles and Hawks locate their prey while flying high above the ground?

Many birds like Eagles and Hawks have a sharp sense of sight to locate their food.

A mosquito moves toward human and bites even in a dark room as it has the
ability to smell human odour, detect body heat and body humidity.

Dogs markout their area with their urine. They can make out if another dog
has come into their area by the smell of its urine or potty (laterine).

 Owls have large eyes which are fixed.

 Owls are nocturanal and active at night.
 Their neck is flexible and they can turn their head almost around.

In most of the birds eyes are fixed and cannot move. So birds keep moving
their neck very often.

Q11. Do Animals see colours?

Animals cannot see as many colours as we can. It is believed that animals


that are awake in the day time can see some colours. Those animals that are awake
at night can see things only in black and white colours.

(a) Langur (b) Sloth

Langur:

 Langur is an animal which lives on the top of the tree.


 It wants other animals of dangers like a tiger or leopard.
 The langur does this by making special warning call.

Sloth:

 It looks like a bear.


 It spends almost 17 hours a day sleeping while hanging upside down on a
tree branch.
 The sloth eats the leaves of the same tree. Sloth lives for about 40
years and that time they move around only eight trees.
 Once a week it comes down from the tree to relieve it self.

Most of the birds have their eyes on either side of the head to focus on
two different things at a time.

Sleeping patterns differ in animals depending upon their need to ear and
conserve energy.
Q15. Why do big animals like, Elephant and Girafee sleep for short period of time?

Big animals eat large amount of food because, they need more energy. So
they need plenty of time to eat and digest their food. It is for this reason that
they sleep for a short period.

Q16. Describe sleeping habbits of different animals.

 Like us animals also sleep to take rest.


 Big animals sleep for a short period some big animals like Python and Tigers
sleep for more than 15 hours.

 Small animals sleep for longer hours because they spend more energy than
large animals.
 Dogs and Cats close their eyes to sleep.

 Horse sleep while standing.


 Owls sleep during day time.

 Bats sleep hanging upside down.

 Dolphin sleeps with one eye open.

1. A Tiger can see six times better at night than us.
2. A tiger’s sense of hearing is so sharp.
3. The ears of the tiger can move in different directions and this helps
to catch sounds from all around.
4. Tigers make different sounds for different purposes.
5. Its roar can be heard up to 3 km away.
6. The tigers whiskers are very sensitive they help the tiger to move.
7. Tigers mark their area with their urine.
