CLASS- V SUBJECT- EVS
LESSON- 1 ( SUPER SENSES )
Q1 What are sense organs ? What are their functions ?
Ans. Sense organs keep us aware of our surrounding. They help us to receive
information about the world around us. By processing the information we
receive through these senses, we become aware of our surrounding and respond
in a suitable way.

Q2 What are the five main sense organs and their functions?
Ans. eyes- to see- sense of sight
Nose- to smell- sense of smell
Ears- to hear- sense of hearing
Tongue- to taste- sense of taste
Skin- to feel- sense of touch

Q3 Which is the most developed sense in humans?

Ans. Sense of sight

Q4 Which is the most developed sense in dogs?

Ans. Sense of smell

Q5 How does a dog locate its food?

Ans. Dogs have a very powerful sense of smell which helps them to locate their
food.

5th EVS/2020-21/PJ/AECS-6
Q6 What do animals use their sense of smell for?
Ans. Animals use their sense of smell much more than humans do. They use it
to-
(i) identify the presence of other animals in their surrounding
(ii) track their food or prey

Q7 In what ways do humans make use of the amazing sense of smell of

dogs?
Ans. (i) in rescue operations after an accident ( building collapse or a natural
calamity like earthquake etc)
(ii) tracing thieves or criminals
(iii) in tracing lost things
(iv) in detecting hidden bombs or mines

Q8 How do dogs mark their own area? How do they know if another dog
has entered their area?
Ans. Dogs mark their own area by their urine or faecal matter. They know the
presence of another dog in their area by the smell of the other dog’s urine.

Q9 How do ants find their food?

Ans. Ants have very strong sense of smell. Like other insects, they smell with
their antennae which are long and thin.

Q10 How do ants communicate with each other?

Ans. Ants communicate with each other through chemical signals. For example-
if an ant finds food, it leaves a chemical trail or path along the ground on its
way home. Other ants soon follow this trail. They leave more chemicals on their
way to keep the trail alive till all the food is collected.

Q11 Comment on- ‘the sense of vision of owls’.
Ans. Owls are hunting birds that look for their prey at night. They have large
forward looking eyes. The large size of the eyes help owls to see objects even in
low light conditions (at night).

Q12 How do mosquitoes use their sense of smell to locate their prey?
Ans. Mosquitoes have a strong sense of smell. They find their prey (humans) by
the smell of their feet and heat of their body.

Q13 Name an insect which can recognize its female by its smell from many
kilometres away.
Ans. Silkworm

Q14 Name the following-

(a) a bird with eyes on either side of its head- pigeon
(b) a bird with eyes in front of its head- owl

Q15 What is binocular vision?

Ans. If an animal can focus both its eyes on the same object at the same time, it
is called binocular vision. Animals like monkeys, apes have binocular vision.
Binocular vision increases the field of vision and helps in judging the distance
and size of the object accurately.

Q16 What is monocular vision?

Ans. If an animal focuses both its eyes on two different objects at the same
time, it is called monocular vision. Example- frogs and most birds

Q17 Why do birds move their neck very often?

Ans. We see birds moving their neck very often because their eyes are fixed and
cannot move. So, they have to turn their neck often to see around.

5th EVS/2020-21/PJ/AECS-6
Q18 Differentiate between the sense of sight of birds (monocular vision)
and humans (binocular vision)
Ans. BIRDS (MONOCULAR VISION)–
(1) They have eyes on either side of the head
(2) They can focus their eyes on two different objects at a time
(3) They cannot estimate the distance of the object
HUMANS (BINOCULAR VISION)-
(1) They have both the eyes in front of their head
(2) They can focus both their eyes only on one object at a time
(3) They can estimate the distance of the object accurately

Q19 What are nocturnal animals?

Ans. The animals which are active during night are called nocturnal animals.
Example- bats, rats, owls etc.

Q20 What are diurnal animals?

Ans. The animals which are active during the day time are called diurnal
animals. Example- birds, humans etc.

Q21 Why do most of the nocturnal animals have only black and white
vision and not colour vision?
Ans. The cells that are responsible for colour vision work only when bright light
falls on them. However, nocturnal animals are active only during night time
(when there is no bright) therefore they have only black and white vision.

Q22 What is the function of external ears?

Ans. The main function of the external ears is to catch sounds and divert them
into the ear canal for better hearing. However, in some animals external ears
also help in regulating the body temperature and driving away the insects.

5th EVS/2020-21/PJ/AECS-6
Q23 Is there a link between the size of animals’ ears and their hearing? If
yes, what?
Ans. Yes, there is a link between the size of the ear and the hearing capacity.
The larger the size of ears the better is the hearing. Example- bat, elephant,
rabbit etc.

Q24 How do snakes hear?

Ans. Snakes do not have ear openings. They detect sound by feeling or sensing
the vibrations on the ground.

Q25 Why is the sense of touch important?

Ans. Skin continuously passes information to our brain. It monitors touch, pain,
temperature and other factors and so we can avoid injuring ourselves.

Q26 What do you mean by tsunami?

Ans. Earthquakes on the ocean floor can give a push to surrounding sea water
and create one or more large, destructive waves called tsunamis, also known as
seismic sea waves.

Q27 How is echo produced?

Ans. When a loud sound bounces back after striking a nearby hard object, it
produces an echo.

Q28 How do bats locate their food at night?

Ans. Bats smell, hear, taste, feel and see just like us. Bats have perfectly good
eyes for seeing in the daytime. But they do most of their hunting at night. So
instead of relying on their sense of vision, bats make rapid high pitched sounds
called ultrasounds. The echoes of the sound help bats to locate their food and
obstacles.

Q29 Other than bats name two more animals which rely on echo?
Ans. Dolphins, whales

Q30 What is hibernation?
Ans. A long sleep or a long period of inactivity during the winter season is
called hibernation. Animals hibernate to cross the difficult conditions (extreme
cold). Example- lizard

Q31 What is aestivation?

Ans. A long sleep or period of inactivity during the summer season is called
aestivation. Animals aestivate to cross the difficult conditions (extreme heat,
scarcity of water ). Example- desert tortoise

Q32 What are whiskers? What is their function?

Ans. Whiskers are special hair that stick out from the cheeks, chin and from
above the eyes of some animals like cat, tiger etc.
They act as very sensitive feelers which help the animals to sense the
movements or vibrations in the air. They can also feel their way around in the
dark and find their prey.

Q33 Why are tigers in danger?

Ans. Tigers are reducing rapidly due to the increase in both natural and human
threats.
Natural threats- forest fires, earthquakes etc.
Human threats- hunting, poaching, destruction of forest for human settlements
etc.

Q34 What is poaching? Why is it done?

Ans. Illegal killing of wild animals for their various body parts is called
poaching.
Poaching is done to get animal skin, fur, bones, tusks etc which are sold at high
prices for making different products and medicines.

5th EVS/2020-21/PJ/AECS-6
Q35 What are national parks? Why are they set up?
Ans. National parks are places for preservation and protection of birds and
animals. These parks provide wild animals space which is similar to their
natural habitat.

Q36 Write the names of some of the national parks and also mention the
state in which they are.
Ans. Jim Corbett national park- Uttaranchal
Kanha national park- Madhya Pradesh
Hazaribagh national park- Jharkhand
Kaziranga wildlife sanctuary- Assam
Ghana bird sanctuary- Rajasthan
Gir national park- Gujarat
Sunderbans tiger reserve- West Bengal

Q37 Why do some singers put their hand on their ear when they sing?
Ans. When we put our hand on our ear, we can hear our own voice more
clearly. Sometimes singers put their hand on their ear when they sing in order to
check their voice quality and singing.

Q38 Fill in the blanks.

1) Birds like kites, eagles and vultures can see __________________ times as
far as we can.
2) Tigers can see ____________ times better than most of us humans.
3) Tigers mark their area with their _____________.
4) A snake doesn’t smell things with its nose, but with its ________________ .
5) Sound travels four times _______________ in water than in air.

Q39 Write a few sentences on-

a) Musk deer- It is found in the forest of Kashmir. The male musk deer has a
pair of small hairy glands under its belly, which produce small grains of musk
with a very strong smell. They are killed for musk which is used for perfumes
and medicines.

b) Rhinoceros- It is found in the jungles of Assam. Rhinos are poached for

their horn, which is nothing but densely packed hair.
