INTRODUCTION

HELEN NISBET Hello and welcome to Art Night Dundee!

Artistic Director,
This is the first time the festival has had a full iteration
Art Night 2023
outside London, and I am so happy it is in this city.
When inviting artists to be part of the festival, I spoke
to them about the joy and tenderness of gathering
socially after a long time apart. I referenced house
parties, and the way various rooms hold different forms
of activity — dancing in the living room, a meaningful
conversation in the kitchen, meeting an old friend in
the queue for the toilets, snogging on the stairs, crying
with a pal in the garden.
So the festival is about being together — but it is also
very much about Dundee: the landscape, buildings, rich
cultural and political history, and crucially, the people.
For the 10 Art Night commissions, artists have developed
and presented work that binds their own practices and
experiences to this singular place and time. Some are
personal responses — opportunities to pause and reflect;
some are informed by or created in collaboration with
the people of Dundee; some of the projects point to
global environmental and political concerns; some speak
of love as a space for hope, and some promise to raise
your public approval ratings.
Credit: Marie Nisbet There is no one way to experience the festival. Make
your own schedule, keep plans flexible and leave space
for unexpected encounters. Make sure you don’t miss
Inwith — projects by a selection of Dundee’s art and
community-led groups, including billboards, flower
shows, trad music sessions and vending machines.
Art Night taking place here in Dundee is entirely down to
people. There are too many to mention in the small word
count I have here, but I do want to thank our partners,
supporters and friends — from galleries and museums,
to Dundee City Council and the local community groups
who made Art Night happen. Vitally, we would not be
here tonight without the talented artists who have
developed such beautiful work for the festival. I also
want to note three people who helped me plot things out
at the very beginning — Leonie, Eoin, Beth, thank you.
Finally, one of the best things about bringing Art Night
to Dundee has been working with a predominantly local
team — Lizzie, Jamie, Becca, Sarah, Jen, Emma, Nicola,
Cathy, Philippine — you are inspiring and brilliant.
Enjoy Art Night Dundee, and don’t forget to have a
fudge doughnut.

ABOUT THE WORK:
The Hi-Visit is a participatory installation at Dundee’s legendary artist-run exhibition

an ordinary person by wearing a fluorescent yellow bib, or show responsibility by
wearing a hard hat; they might enjoy an opportunity to associate themselves with
the working class, or to illustrate job opportunities, wealth, economic growth and
prosperity, simply by wearing some safety specs.
Audiences are invited to take part, watch and enjoy a drink while proceedings
take place.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Inefficient Solutions is the performative identity of Dundonian artist Euan Taylor.
In his work he commits to the the guise of a sub-contractor operating out of
Dundee, never deviating from the company’s core values and aims: creating and
solving problems; being on the scrounge; building building sites, and undertaking
futile endeavours. “Inefficient Solutions consistently complies with these targets”.
A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Taylor has
participated in exhibitions, workshops and residencies in Dundee, wider Scotland,
and internationally. He is a founding member of Tin Roof Arts Collective, and a
board member for Dundee Ceramics Workshop.
ABOUT THE VENUE:
GENERATORprojects is a dynamic, vibrant exhibition and events space in the heart

the tradition of ARIs (Artist Run Initiatives): non-profit, volunteer-led, grassroots
spaces that exist to foster and sustain creativity and participation in the arts.
With an emphasis on contemporary art, GENERATOR provides a crucial platform

cultural identity — from icons like GENERATORprojects to new radicals such as
Monday 12 June Wooosh Gallery. In spite of this, space remains the biggest challenge for artists
7pm – 8.30pm to base, make and show their practice in the city.
The Steps Theatre, As Dundee prepares to welcome Art Night to its cultural venues and
Central Library public spaces, Creative Dundee is partnering with Art Night, leading two
conversations with local collectives and organisations which explore how artists
and communities creatively use and reimagine space in and around the city.
MAKING SPACE
The first event will take place in the lead up to Art Night, bringing together
Tuesday 11 July artists, collectives and grass roots organisations in Dundee that are part of
7pm – 8.30pm the festival programme, alongside Art Night’s Artistic Director Helen Nisbet.
The Steps Theatre, The conversation will focus on the use and occupation of temporary spaces,
Central Library through to more permanent cultural uses. What opportunities to make, share
and collaborate do these spaces bring?
Following the festival, the second event on 11 July will discuss Art Night’s
ambition of making spaces and culture more accessible, exploring its legacy
and discussing how together we can utilise this momentum with conversations
led by artist-led and community groups who took part in Art Night’s
Inwith programming.
These events will link into Creative Dundee’s wider work addressing the lack of
space in the city and advocating for better access to creative spaces and tools
for both creative practitioners and communities across Dundee.
This event has been curated by Creative Dundee in partnership with Art Night.
