Conditions
- You are to retain a copy of your assessment, particularly if it was completed digitally.
Unless otherwise instructed by your teacher, you are to:
- include a header and footer with your name and your teacher’s name, as well as a
page number in the footer.
- format with black font, size 12, Arial, Trebuchet MS, or Times New Roman.
- use the class time provided efficiently, and may work at home to complete this task,
so long as it is independent and meets the requirements of the Statement of
Ownership above.
Design Portfolio:
Refer to the worksheet provided below to design your project. Your portfolio will be made
up of the completed booklet which will include photo evidence showing each stage of the
project.

DESIGN BRIEF
For centuries tables and other small household furniture have been an integral part of
furniture in the family home. Whilst the main function of the table has remained significantly
the same, the styles, materials and processes have advanced, and many are now mass
manufactured rather than custom made by master craftsman.
BRIEF
You are to design, construct and evaluate a small piece of furniture for the family home.
RESTRICTIONS
A list of factors may restrict or limit what you can make. Including but not limited to time,
size, cost, materials, finishes, skills, tools and equipment.
• Size: maximum 400 x 400 x 400mm. Any adjustments in size need to be made in
consultation with the teacher.
• Time: Term 3 and 4. Project to be completed by end of Term 4
• Butt Joints are unsuitable for most joints in this project and should not be used.
• The article must incorporate a least one drawer or hinged door/lid.
• Mainly constructed from timber or manufactured timber.
CRITERIA TO APPRAISE
Write a list of questions that you can use to evaluate design ideas and the final product
against.
These will include questions that involve but are not limited to:
• Function - How well does it perform the job that it was designed to do.
• Safety aspects
• Aesthetics – The appearance of the product (Shape, form texture & style)
• Environmental impact & Sustainable practice (consider also life-cycle analysis)
• Political & Economic Considerations e.g. if we buy raw materials from overseas rather
than within Australia, Australian jobs may be lost.
• Ethical considerations – Fair trade
• Strength & Durability
• Cost
• Maintenance
• Ergonomics
RESEARCH & INVESTIGATION
1. List items that could be made within the constraints, some examples have been
provided to assist:
- Lamp
- Jewellery Box
- Clock
- Vase

Let your mind explore ideas to expand the brainstorming diagram below. For each variable put down as many ideas
as you can
EXISTING SOLUTIONS
Research some existing solutions available on the market and comment on these in reference
to cost, materials, safety, ergonomics, aesthetics, production techniques and sustainability
practices. Provide a screenshot for each.
Existing Solution 1
Wooden controller holder
Cost: $50
Existing Solution 2
Wooden stickman controller holder
Cost: $45
Existing Solution 3
INITIAL IDEAS
Sketch some ideas that could solve the problem. Minimum 20 different sketches.
You may not spend any longer than 40 seconds sketching each idea. Briefly
annotate when all 20 are completed.
Investigate factors that influence the project design and construction.
Note: Sources of information must be referenced
Function
1. List the job/s that the article is to perform. Who will use it? Where will the
article be located? Does anything associated with the article need measuring for
the space? If so, record these measurements.
Ergonomics
1. Relates to how the user interacts with the products. How will you implement
ergonomics into your project? Example: size, shape, comfort, look, feel.
Wood Joints
1. Sketch joints that could be suitable for this project. For each joint add notes to
explain where on the project it would be suitable to use and why.
Materials
What are some ethical or cultural issues you should consider when selecting materials and
processes? Comment on the following:
1. Consider Fair trade
2. What are some sustainable and environmental issues you should consider when
selecting materials and processes?
3. What are some economic issues you should consider when selecting materials
and processes?
Finishes
List finishes that could be suitable noting advantages and disadvantages for each.
Safety
1. Note any safety issues that you or others need to keep in mind that specifically
relate to your design ideas.

SOLUTION
1. Neatly sketch an idea that could solve the problem. Use the pictorial (isometric)
grid below. Add notes to aid understanding and clarity. Complete the sketches in
ink.
Refine your project by sketching and describing how the parts of the project could
be assembled/joined and shaped.
2. Determine the most suitable material/s for this project, giving well thought out
reasons for your choice/s
3. Decide on construction methods and shapes. State why you have chosen them.
Use sketches to support your decisions.
4. What jigs, pattern, guides and/or templates could you use to ensure Quality
Control and Efficiency in production? If you have a part to be made that is of the
same dimensions, you should consider constructing these. Sketch you designs for
any jigs, pattern, guides and/or templates here:
5. Decide on a finish, giving well thought out reasons for your choice.

MATERIAL LIST
CONSTRUCTION
When your planning has been approved you may begin construction.
In detail evaluate the design and construction of your project. This evaluation will
be assessed and form part of your semester grade.
2. What tools and machines did you use in the construction of the cabinetwork
project? How do you rate your precision and accuracy when you used these tools
and machines?
3. What problems did you encounter during construction and how did you solve
these problems?
6. If you had the opportunity to design and make the project again, what would you
do differently and why? Sketch, with notes, the change/s.
7. What did you learn working through this project?
