THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Using Media to Evangelize at Christ the King: WE are called to be Evangelizers!

Evangelization has always been the mission of the Catholic Church. The call to evangelize first given to us by Christ requires that we proclaim the word of God using every means of communication. In the Church today using the media has become indispensable in bringing the Gospel message into the world through the internet, radio and television. Beginning December 16 and running through January 8 there will be a national campaign reaching every U.S. diocese using advertisements that invite Catholics to come home. Here at Christ the King Parish, all parishioners are encouraged to take part in this evangelization effort in three simple ways: When you see someone new or unfamiliar at Mass, introduce yourself and welcome them to our parish. The ads on TV may result in unexpected conversations about the Catholic faith. When someone talks about the ads listen carefully to their interests in the Catholic faith. You might invite them to join you for Mass if they dont have a home parish. If you know someone who is Catholic and no longer attends Mass, invite them to come home for the holidays, to Christ the King or their own parish. In these three simple ways you continue the mission that Jesus gave to all his followers, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Let us always be a welcome sight of hospitality to all our brothers and sisters who come through our doors. We strive to be the most welcome to all those friends we see each week. Say hello, move into the middle of the pew, so no one has to crawl over you, to get in. Help the older person you see, smile, offer a hand to a parent who is caring for a child, dont leave early out of habit, shake the hand and say hello to the Priest, greet your neighbor after mass and askhow are you? These are all simple ways to evangelize and, if necessary, use words. Have a blest and peaceful Advent Season. Fr. Peter Jarosz, Pastor

Thank you to the 200+ parishioners who have returned your commitment cards! If you have not returned a commitment card, please do so ASAP. There are three envelopes in which we ask your support. The white envelopes fund general expense, while green and gold are restricted funds that support specific needs of our mortgage and capital improvements. By completing the commitment card, it will help us to operate and plan in a fiscally prudent manner. God has blessed each and every one of us! One way to show our gratitude to God is to share some of our gifts. Ideally, we invest in what we believe in. We volunteer. We financially support. Hopefully you believe in Christ the King and believe in what our parish does for you and for our community. We hope that you find that this is a place you want to invest in. The Finance Council

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays second reading Paul concludes his letter to the Christian community at Thessalonica by providing it with actions to take as they wait for the return of the Lord. The first action is to rejoice always and give thanks in all circumstances. This sounds easy but its not. The two words that make this task difficult are always and all. This means giving thanks and rejoicing even when our circumstances are not always moments of joy and thanksgiving, or when we are confronted with a broken world. Prayerful stewards rejoice and give thanks in all circumstances because they are people of hope. A good reflection this week would be how the season of Advent can give you reason to hope.

TIME CHANGE FOR WENDESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY GROUP

The Wednesday Evening Bible Study Group will now meet at 7:00 pm instead of 7:30 pm in the East Room on the first and third Wednesday of the month. We hope this will make it more convenient for anyone who wants to attend these informative sessions. The book of Isaiah is currently being discussed.
We will not meet on December 21 due to the Christmas holy-days. Please grab your Bible and join us. If you have any questions, please call Don at 630-629-3028.

Men Seeking Holiness Retreat

A Two Day Retreat on The Universal Call to Holiness under the Patronage of St. Therese Sponsored by the Diocese of Joliet From 5:00 p.m. Tuesday December 27 until Noon Thursday December 29 For men married or single between the ages of 18 and 35 Cost: $ 30.00 which includes 5 meals, shared rooms and materials. Please pay with a check made payable to the Diocese of Joliet Where: St. Charles Borromeo Pastoral Center 101 Airport Rd. Romeoville, IL 60446 For questions or to register please contact: Nora Labanauskas at [email protected] or 815-834-4004 What to Bring: Gym clothes for free time, causal clothes and appropriate attire for Mass. Please bring towels and toiletries. Lastly, please bring a Bible, notebook, pen, and a prayerful spirit.

CHRISTMAS HOSPITALITY
There is a story about someone who once complained to the pastor that whenever he came to church the music was always the same: "Silent Night" or "Christ the Lord is Risen Today." Those of you who are here Sunday after Sunday can be a welcoming presence to those who come to church only on Christmas and Easter. Our hospitality can be a powerful way of saying, "We're glad you're here. Please join us every Sunday for worship." Our hospitable friendliness can be a powerful tool of evangelization, reaching out to those who do not feel regularly connected to a parish.

The Giving Tree

A Stewardship Prayer - For Advent

Heavenly Father, You give us this blessed season of Advent as a gift of time to prepare for the coming of the Christ Child. But all too often we turn this gift into a source of frenzy, stress and anxiety; a time where were apt to prepare for a Christmas celebration looking perfect on the outside, but spiritually exhausting and without true meaning. Restore in us that inherent quest for quiet expectation and hope. Show us the way to a more peaceful, prayerful disposition that makes us more open to a conversion of heart. And give us the courage to let go of things that are ultimately unimportant to the true meaning of Christmas. Help us be good stewards of this Advent season, so that on the Feast of the Nativity, we will be ready with our own sacred space for the arrival of your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we now pray. Amen.

Simbang Gabi Mass Monday, December 19th @ 7:30 pm

Confessions 6:30 - 7:15
Simbang Gabi means 'Evening Mass'. In practice, it is a series of nine Advent evening Masses from December 15 through December 23. Simbang Gabi tradition was brought to the Philippines by the Spanish friars at the start of the Catholic evangelization of the country. Since then, it has become a permanent Filipino spiritual tradition. Originally (and still observed in most places in the Philippines), these masses start at 4:00 am. Church bells start ringing at 3:00 am so the villagers can get ready for mass. Because it is still dark out, it is still considered nighttime, hence, Simbang Gabi (Evening mass). As the church bells pealed to get every-one up for the Simbang Gabi, the local bands started playing traditional carols all over town. Families would start walking over to church passing through homes with lighted 'parols' (Christ-mas lanterns usually shaped like a star) fashioned out of bamboo and colored paper. After mass, families and friends enjoyed the native delicacies available at the churchyard. The Filipinos are proud of their customs and traditions and encourage EVERYONE to join their celebration, regardless of your ethnic background. As always, fellowship will be observed in the gym after the mass. All are invited to the Simbang Gabi Celebration at Christ the King Parish on Monday, December 19 at 7:30 pm in church. There will be a social in the Gym following our Mass.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation celebrates the great gift of Gods mercy. Sometimes it seems that we concentrate too much on our own sins and not enough on Gods mercy. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a wonderful way to strengthen our journey with the Lord. Our sins, more than anything else, weigh us down. The Sacrament of Reconciliation can be a great help as we journey together without the guilt and sin that can be very heavy to carry.

Living the Eucharist is a parish renewal program that will be offered to all parishioners this Lent season. Small groups will gather weekly for 6 weeks during the Lenten season. There is something for adults, teens and families. The weekly gathering will be 90 minute session reflecting on the Sunday readings and other topics each week. There will be a Living the Eucharist retreat on April 28, 2012. Living the Eucharist has the potential to renew and deepen the Eucharistic spirituality of parishioners in the following ways: Increased knowledge about the centrality of the Eucharist in Catholic life Greater appreciation and understanding of preparing for and participating in Sunday Mass Deeper, more intentional engagement in Sunday Mass, and, by extension, in parish life Keener awareness of living as a disciple of Jesus and building up the Kingdom of God A stronger, more Eucharist-based Catholic identity among participants More frequent attendance at Sunday Mass Opportunities to increase the knowledge, skills, and commitment of the parish liturgical ministers, thereby creating more vibrant Sunday liturgies Increased opportunities to invite and welcome inactive Catholics and the unchurched

Gaudete in Domino semper Rejoice in the Lord always.

We celebrate that we are half way through our Advent preparation, as we await and long for the coming of Our Lord and Savior, the Messiah, the Holy One of God, the Christ Child Incarnate (enfleshed) among us. We light the Rose candle and the Priest and Deacon may wear Rose colored vestments. But, have we been preparing, have we even begun preparing for the Birth of Christ into our hearts in new ways, in new ways into a world of hunger, thirst and war? John is calling as "the voice of one crying out in the desert, 'make straight the way of the Lord,'" He is calling to repentance and to a baptism of water. He announces the one who calls to the Sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation. These last days of preparation are the time to answer the call to repent, to receive the Sacrament of reconciliation, to give Jesus the gift of a clean heart and soul, which is also His gift for us. One additional opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation is at a communal reparation and individual confession on Friday evening at 7pm. Several priests will be available so no one has to wait too long. Deacon Frank Lillig Have a Blessed Day!

Christmas: A Gift of Life

The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as "good news" to the people of every age and culture. At the dawn of salvation, it is the Birth of a Child which is proclaimed as joyful news: "I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord" (Lk 2:10-11). The source of this "great joy" is the Birth of the Saviour; but Christmas also reveals the full meaning of every human birth, and the joy which accompanies the Birth of the Messiah is thus seen to be the foundation and fulfilment of joy at every child born into the world (cf. Jn 16:21) (Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, n.1). Is 61:1-2a, 10-11 1 Thes 5:16-24 Jn 1:6-8, 19-28 The command to rejoice always may seem like a demanding requirement, given the fact that things do not always go our way, because of circumstances beyond our control. Yet this rejoicing is always possible, because it is based on the salvation which Christ has come to bring. I rejoice heartily in the Lord, Isaiah writes, for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation and wrapped me in a mantle of justice. This justice, manifested when God rescues his people (for example, from slavery in Egypt) has come to us in the Divine Child whose birth we are preparing to celebrate. He wrapped us in a mantle of justice when, by his death and resurrection, he rescued us from the power of death. To proclaim liberty to captives is his mission, as the First Reading indicates in a passage that would later be quoted by Christ himself in reference to his own ministry. The Christmas song O Holy Night reflects this theme when it says, Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother, and in his name all oppression shall cease. We who are rescued must rescue the poor and weak among us, including the poorest and weakest, the unborn children. To celebrate the God who comes to free the oppressed, and has freed us, means to commit ourselves to ending oppression in our culture. - Priests for Life

Come, experience the presence of the Lord among his people.

December 11, 2011 Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Year of the Eucharist 2010-2011

Page 9

This Sunday is sometimes called Gaudete Sunday. In Latin, Gaudete is an imperative verb meaning Rejoice! Advent is now half finished, and the Church, in the liturgy, reminds believers that while we wait for the Lords final advent, and while we wait for the celebration of Christmas that Christ is already in our midst, and His saving grace is part of our lives. Because the Lord has come to us, and remains with us in the Church, especially in the Holy Eucharist, our hope in His gift of eternal life is assured. In the O Antiphons, and in O Come, O come Emmanuel, a symbol of this hope is that of the Rising Sun, the Dayspring from on high. In Latin, this reference to Christ is O Oriens. Oriens means Rising, and so refers to the dawn of a new day, or even of the direction East. Christ as the Rising Sun is humanitys hope for reconciliation with God, for new beginnings and the dawn of a new creation. Early church buildings tended to be built so that the altar faced the East, the direction of the rising sun. Our church at Christ the King is oriented, that is, built so that the priest at the altar faces the sun of a new day, symbolically facing the final coming of Christ, who does come to us in the Liturgy. The rising sun in the ancient world was also a royal symbol. The Pharaohs of Egypt were identified with the suns disc. The kings of Persia were often depicted as being protected by a winged sun. Psalm 110, in speaking of the ancient kings of Israel at their enthronement, says In holy splendor before the dawn, like the dew I have begotten you. These words are read by Christians as referring to Christ, the true King of Israel and the Sun of Justice. In Psalm 27, God is referred to as light and salvation, and in the prophecy of Malachi, one of the last prophetic books of the Old Testament, Gods saving presence is described as the rising sun, with healing in its wings. Malachi here uses the common depictions in ancient art of the sun protecting the king with the wings that it uses to move across the sky. The royal symbol of the king is also seen in the title, Branch of Jesse Stem. Jesse was the father of David. The first king of Israel was Saul, who was a bit of a disaster. When the next king was to be chosen, the prophet Samuel was instructed to anoint the son of Jesse as king. The home of Jesse was Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse presented seven Sons to Samuel, but none of them were to be the anointed. The youngest son, David, was finally brought out before the prophet, and Samuel anointed him with oil. The verb to anoint in Hebrew is mashah, and an anointed person is meshshiah, which is rendered in English as Messiah. The Greek equivalent is Christos, which, of course, gives us Christ, the Anointed One. After David became king, he ruled for a time in Hebron, but then moved his capital to Jerusalem, a city which did not belong originally to any of the twelve tribes of Israel. He wanted to build a temple, but died before he could. His son Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem. The prophet Nathan had given David a promise, however. He told David that, although the king wanted to build God a house, it was God who would build him a house. The Hebrew word beth, means house, and the prophet made a word play with it. Gods house would be the Temple, and Davids house would be his descendants who would rule in Jerusalem. Most of Davids royal descendants were not very faithful as rulers of Israel and Judah. A longing began to develop for a true and just king who would rule rightly. In 587, the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple, and exiled the Jews from their land. In 539 they were allowed to return home, but were never allowed to have their own king again. There was a return of a monarch after 165 BC, when the Maccabee brothers set up a kingship in Israel, but they were not of the House of David. During all those centuries, the desire for the Messiah, the true anointed King of Israel, grew stronger and stronger, and so we read in St. Matthews Gospel that Joseph, of the house and family of David, adopted the Son of Mary as his own. Gods promise to David, made a thousand years earlier, had finally been fulfilled. - Father Bob

December 14, 2011 Week 8: A Vast Company of Witnesses-The Communion of Saints Father Barron gives consideration to some of the Churchs greatest heroes. He demonstrates their extraordinary examples and displays both the passion and the creative potential of the Catholic Church. Highlighting Katherine Drexl, Therese of Liseux, Edith Stein, and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Father Barron tells the story of the church as a vast company of witnesses who are called by Christ to be a communion of saints. There will be no classes during the Holidays - we will resume January 11, 2012.
