Vygotsky’s Socio-cultural theory also known as sociocultural or social development theory was
proposed by Russian Psychologist Lev Vygotsky. This theory emphasizes the role of social interactions
and cultural influences on cognitive development.

According to Vygotsky, children development is shaped through interactions with more

knowledgeable individuals, typically adults and peer. Within their culture context. He believe that
learning and development occur within a social and cultural environment, and that children acquire
knowledge, skills and understanding through social interaction.

Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory has important implications for education. It suggests that educators
should create opportunities for collaboration and social interaction among students, as this can enhance
learning and development . Teachers can provide scaffolding and temporary support, to help students
bridge the gap between what they currently know and what they are capable of learning with guidance.

Overall, Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory emphasizes the social and cultural context of learning and
development and highlights the role of social interactions, language and collaborative learning in
cognitive growth.
