How the Face Ages

How a person’s face ages depends on a variety of factors. A person’s genetics has a lot to do
with it. Also if they are exposed to a lot of sun or live in a very dry climate. If they live a healthy
lifestyle. Smokers usually have more wrinkles earlier than non smokers. Heavy drinkers usually
age faster than someone who drinks in moderation or not at all. And a person’s general health,
the amount of sleep they get, and the amount of stress they have in their life also affects how
he/she will age. The main things that begin to happen to a person’s face as they age are as
follows and they all need to be considered when you do old age makeup. I have listed the
various aging processes in black and how you effect them with makeup in red.
1. As a person ages the skin gets thinner. Really old people have very thin skin so you are
able to see through to the blood vessels below. Hence their skin tends to look a bit
blue. (You achieve this by changing foundation colors to more sallow or bluish gray)
2. Older people tend to lose pigment in their skin and in their hair resulting in lighter skin
tone and gray hair, eyebrows, lashes. (Change foundation color and add hair whitener to
brows and lashed)
3. In men the eyebrows tend to get bushy whereas women’s eyebrows tend to get thinner.
(For men push brow hairs backwards and add whitener. For women cover with
foundation then redraw thinner in lighter color)
4. Eyelashes tend to get shorter and thinner. (Don’t add any mascara)
5. Skin becomes more textured and uneven in pigment distribution eg. Age spots (Add
stipple to areas of face to add texture and draw on age spots here and there)
6. The skin begins to sag so temple area becomes more sunken in as does the area under
the cheeks. In really old people the skull structure becomes more evident. (Add
shadows to temple area. Shadow more strongly under cheeks)
7. The nasolabial fold (laugh lines) becomes more and more pronounced. ( Add shadow to
natural laugh line and taper at bottom then highlight on upper edge and blend. Shadows
should start at the top of the nostril and highlights go on the outside of that)
8. The jaw line begins to sag. (Have highlight and shadow angle up into an inverted V that
ties in with the nasolabial fold)
9. Wrinkles at the corners of the mouth get more pronounced. (Start shadow at corners of
the mouth and angle down tapering at bottom. Add highlights to outside and blend)
10. The cartilage in the nose and ears continues to grow throughout a person’s life so the
nose and ears actually get bigger. (To make the nose appear longer run highlight up
higher and down under nose tip)
11. Under eye bags and circles appear. (Add highlight under eyes then add shadow under
highlight tapering to the outside. Shadow inner eye socket to sink in more)
12. Some people develop sagging of the upper eyelids. (Add highlights under outer eyebrow
then shadow under highlight angling down at sides)
13. Lips tend to get thinner. (Draw lip liner to the inside of natural lip edge)
14. Some people will develop wrinkles at the corners of their eyes eg. Crows feet and
smokers usually have wrinkles around their lips. (Try to keep lip wrinkles running
vertically and start eye wrinkles at outer corner of the eye and fan out to the side)
15. Some people get wrinkles on their foreheads or between their eyebrows eg. frown lines.
(To have these look natural scrunch up your forehead then draw shadows into the folds.
They should be wider in the center then taper to the ends. Highlight go below the
shadows)
16. In really old people their eyes tend to look red as their lower eyelids tend to sag
exposing the red inner mucus membrane. This is also true of the lower lip as muscle
tone weakens so the lip sags exposing the inner mucus membrane. (For the eyes draw a
red line right under the lower lash edge. For the lips just add red at the inside center of
the lower lip)
How old you are trying to do your makeup will depend on how much or how little you do and
how pronounced you make the makeup. And what colors of makeup you use to do old age
makeup also affects how old you will appear. Remember all wrinkles tape out to nothing at the
ends.
