Definition/Overview
PROTOTYPING & MANUFACTURING
• The process in which design teams ideate,
experiment with, and bring concepts to life,
ranging from paper ideas to digital designs.
• A systems development method in which
a prototype is built, tested and then
reworked as necessary until an acceptable
outcome is achieved from which the
complete system or product can be
developed.

Definition/Overview
Prototyping comes in many forms;
• Low tech sketches or paper screens.
• High tech operational systems , e.g.
CASE (Computer Aided Systems
Engineering.

Objectives of Prototyping &
Manufacturing
• To evaluate the real cost of your product
• To get feedback from potential users
• Presentation
• Testing and evaluation
• To improve the quality of the product

Methodology
The prototyping and manufacturing stage can
be broken down into five main steps.
• Break down the idea to solve the problem.
• Make a rough initial product.
• Build your virtual product.
• Make iterations and changes.
• Manufacturing.

Methodology
1. Break down the idea to solve the problem.
Your initial concept should answer the ff.
questions key to the design;
• Why does the market need your new
product?
• What advantage does it offer over your
competitors?
Make a sketch of the idea on a piece of paper
with the various measurements roughed out.

Methodology
2. Make a Rough Initial Product
• Build a rough and simple model of the
product. This can be done by grabbing a
bottle of glue, some craft board from a
local store, and using a pair of scissors to
make a rough representation of your
product.

Methodology
4. Make Iterations and Changes
• Build a better model from the virtual product
via rapid prototyping.

Benefits of Prototyping and
Manufacturing
• Helps gain buy-in and validate ideas
