QUESTION 1

Figure Q1 shows the plan view of a group of horizontal pipes made of cast iron (k = 0.25 mm)
which connected in series. Determine the total head loss between end A and B if the pipe
diameters are 300 mm and 250 mm which conveying water at a rate of 0.0065 m 3/s.
(Take density, ρ = 1000 kg/m 3 and viscosity, μ = 1.14 X 10-3 Ns/m 2) (CO1-PO1)(C3)

a) Briefly explain the definition and THREE (3) basic principles of branching pipes.

b) Figure Q2(b) below shows a simple pipe network consisting of three loops with the
initial assumed flow rate, Q. Carry out a pipe network analysis using the Head Balance
Method up to first iteration only. Assume that all the pipes have a friction factor,
f=0.0013. Draw a clear diagram indicating your final solution of the correct discharge in
each pipe. (CO1-PO1)(C3)

Determine the flow rate of earth channel with irregular and rough bed surface shown in Figure
Q3 by using Gangguillet and Kutter’s equation. Given the slope of the channel as 6.25 x 10 -4.

QUESTION 4

Figure Q4 shows a trapezoidal channel with a side slope of 1.5: 1 (horizontal: vertical) can
cater a flowrate of 15 m 3/s is to be constructed. If the trapezoidal channel is replace with a
rectangular open channel of 3.0 m wide with the same flowrate. Take the channel slope as
0.004 and the Manning’s roughness coefficient as 0.01. (CO2-PO2)(C6)

i) Prove that the flow condition in the channel is fast.


ii) Design the conjugate depth, D 2 if a hydraulic jump occurs in the channel.
