Two main themes involved in microbiology

 Basic/Pure Microbiology:
 Basic Cellular Processes are studied or Organisms are studied as the
subject itself on a deeper level.
 Applied Microbiology:
 Application of microorganisms in the field of science for the production
of human beneficial products such as medicines, antibiotics, vaccines,
enzymes or other biotechnological purposes etc..

What comes to your mind when you hear the word

Bacteria?
❖ Not all Bacteria Cause disease
➢ Most bacterial species cannot cause disease

❖ Many species play beneficial role

❖ Production of antibiotics and foodstuffs
❖ Decompose organic waste
❖ Produce industrial chemicals such as ethyl alcohol and
acetone
❖ Produce fermented foods such as vinegar, cheese, and
bread
Assignment/Thought of the day

How can a microbe benefit human?

In food?
In environment?
In preventing disease?
In agriculture?
In energy?
In waste water treatment?
