READINGS: The following are some steps on how to become an
effective musical play performer:
How to perform on stage
 Make sure you learn your lyrics.
 Practice performing as much as possible.
You may practice in front of the mirror
 Sing with emotion.
 Break from your character.
 Know your audience.
 Acknowledge other performers.
 Get physical while on stage.
 Make use of the whole space and get close.
7 Steps to Becoming YOUR Best Performer
1. See, feel and hear in your mind’s eye how you want to be perceived
before you hit the stage. Think about how you want the audience to
feel after they are finished watching you perform.

2. Practice with intent. It’s one thing to go over your routine and make
sure you know the steps. When you practice, imagine it is a
performance every time. Invest your emotions into your practice.
You may practice in front of the mirror

3. Surround yourself with positive people. This does not mean people
who don’t tell you what you need to do to be better, but you want
people around you who will encourage you! Especially when you reach
an impasse or a difficult point in your routine.

4. Get organized! Yes, dance is your life, but you still have other
responsibilities. The more you have your “ducks in a row” (to get one's
affairs organized) the more you can focus on your passion!

5. Be encouraging. Every opportunity you get to be on stage is an

opportunity for you to encourage someone. Art speaks to people in
different ways. If you focus on encouraging someone with your art,
you will leave an irreplaceable mark on their hearts.

6. Be open to criticism. If you feel like you have reached your peak, as in
you cannot get any better, then you might as well quit. There is
nothing left for you to do. Everyone can always be better! That’s the
beauty of becoming YOUR best.

2
7. Believe in yourself. If you don’t think you can do it, then you can’t.
Confidence is necessary for anyone who plans on becoming “the best”.

Most visible on stage in a theater production are the actors and actresses
playing their roles. However, behind the scenes is an entire team whose work
begins months in advance of the actual performance. It is they who support the
actors and enable them to truly bring the play to life. While the members of this
team may vary depending on how complex or simple the production is, below are
the basic roles that most plays require:

Producer – In a professional stage production, this is the person who takes the
play from a mere concept to an actual finished presentation. He or she chooses all
the team members and assigns them their functions, and oversees the casting of
the actors and actresses for the different roles.

Note: In a school or class play, the role of the producer is normally fulfilled by the
Drama Club moderator, the classroom teacher, or by the school itself.

Director – The director is the overall artistic coordinator of the entire production.
Like a conductor of an orchestra, he or she has a vision of the desired total effect
and impact of the performance. The director also coordinates closely with the set,
lighting, sound, costume/makeup designers, and the choreographer (if the play
involves dance) to create the envisioned total effect.

Playwright- For a script intended for stage performance, the writer of the script is
more specifically called a playwright. The initial concept or plot may be original,
and then developed into a play script. Or it may be based on an existing story or
another play which the playwright will then adapt to present in a new way.

The script forms the basis of the entire production. It contains the exact lines of
dialogue that each character will memorize and deliver on stage, often with notes
on tone of voice, facial expression, and even movement or blocking. It also provides
a clear description of the set, props, and lighting to be used in each scene.

Set designer – The concept and creation of the physical stage setup is the task of
the set designer. He or she builds the set (or sets) that will simulate the world that
the play’s characters are supposed to live in. The set may be realistic and filled with
authentic details; or it may be minimalist, merely suggesting the setting with a few
pieces of furniture or props and a simple backdrop. In either case, the set designer
ensures that the set will enable the actors to move about easily and naturally to
make their roles believable, and will truly provide the ambiance on stage that the
director and the playwright intend.

Lighting designer – Coordinating closely with the set designer is the lighting
designer. Lighting is critical in creating the mood of each scene in the play,
highlighting a dramatic moment, signaling the entrance of a character, focusing
attention on a specific spot on stage, or even providing the blanket of darkness for
set and prop changes.

Costume designer – The actors and actresses must look believable in their roles,
and much of this is owed to the costume designer. He or she studies the general
setting (time and place) that the play is meant to take place in, as well as each
character in the script. He or she then decides what attire will not only give the

7
audience a clear sense of the setting, but will also express each character’s
personality and distinct qualities.

Sound designer – Similar to the lighting designer, the sound designer serves a vital
role in creating and enhancing the atmosphere of the performance. Sound, in this
case, includes music both on stage and as background, which the sound designer
may need to source to suit the general time and place of the play, as well as
particular scenes.

Note: In large scale productions where live musicians or even a full orchestra are
involved, a separate musical director is responsible for coordinating the play’s
music.

Production manager – Coordinating all the complex behind-the-scenes details of

staging a play is the production manager. He or she is tasked with overseeing the
crews for the sets and props, the sound and music, the lighting, and the costumes.

Technical director – The technical director shadows the play’s director throughout
the entire production process. From the time the director presents his or her vision
for the play and issues instructions at every rehearsal, the technical director
carefully notes how each actor and every member of the stage, sound, lighting, and
costume crews need to be coordinated to bring the director’s vision to life—
ensuring that every instruction is properly executed.

Choreographer – In cases where a play involves dance in certain scenes, a

choreographer is included in the production team. He or she not only plans out all
the dance steps to suit the music, but also rehearses the actors until they are able
to perform the dance skillfully—while remaining “in character” on stage. Should the
play happen to involve fight scenes, the choreographer will likewise program the
moves of the opposing sides so these can be executed not only believably, but safely
as well.

Makeup designer – As the costume designer deliberates on the characters’ main

attire, the makeup designer is brought in to plan the hairstyles and makeup to
complement the costumes. The work of the makeup designer may be as simple as
making the actors look natural for their respective roles—based on their characters’
age and personality, and the time and place of the story. But it may also be far
more challenging, such as transforming the actors into mythical creatures, animals,
a different nationality, or futuristic beings.

What is Contemporary Dance?

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of
several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.
Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance
movements. The term "contemporary" is somewhat misleading: it describes a genre
that developed during the mid-20th century and is still very popular today.

Overview of Contemporary Dance

Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict,
structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using
gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet.
Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.
Pioneers of contemporary dance include Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, and
Merce Cunningham because they broke the rules of the strict forms of ballet. These
dancer/choreographers all believed that dancers should have freedom of movement,
allowing their bodies to freely express their innermost feelings. It's important to
note, however, that while Graham moved into what is now known as modern dance,
and Duncan's style was uniquely her own, Cunningham is often spoken of as the
father of contemporary dance.

Philippine Contemporary Dance

Rising from the rubbles of WW II and freed from American domination, the Filipinos
surged in creativity. The ’50 and ’60s saw dance revival and choreographic
invention.

Schools put up folk dance troupes like the Far Eastern University, Philippine
Normal University (Barangay Folk Dance Troupe) and Philippine Women’s
University. The Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company captivated the world at
Brussels Exposition in 1958. Leonor Orosa Goquingco’s Filipinescas Dance

14
Company, Teresita Pil’s Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company, University of the
Philippines Filipiniana Dance Group, Darangan Cultural Troupe at Mindanao State
University-Marawi, and Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group followed to win their own
awards and accolades abroad. All at first capitalized on the efforts of now-declared
National Artist, Francisca Reyes Aquino, to gain national and international
recognition, from Manila to Broadway and across the Iron Curtain.

In ballet, Orosa Goquingco went to stage Noli Dance Suit and other ballets.
Remedios de Oteyza’s abstract ballets were performed by the De Oteyza Ballet,
Manila Ballet Company and Hariraya Ballet Company (founded with Inday Gaston
Manosa). Rosalia Merino Santos staged and lectured with the Far Eastern
University Modern Experimental Dance Group. Anita Kane toured nationwide with
classical and Filipino ballets of hers called Anita Kane Ballet Company, later
Pamana Ballet. Joining them was Ricardo Cassell from America, first teaching for
Pacita Madrigal (staging Giselle for her and Benny Villanueva Reyes) and later his
wife Roberta’s school and Studio Dance Group. Trudl Dubsky Zipper periodically
returned from the United States to stage ballets and operas.

They all inspired a new group of dance-makers and leaders. Corazon Generoso
Iñigo staged folk dances and choreographed modern pieces for university groups,
for the films and the productions of J. Amado Araneta in Cubao, Quezon City.
Maribel Aboitiz and Eddie Elejar followed up the fame of Manolo Rosado and Fely
Franquelli in Europe. With Joji Felix and Cesar Mendoza, Elejar set up a school at
PWU. He and Julie Borromeo and Felicitas “Tita” Layag Radaic later formed Dance
Theater Philippines as the first professional company, along with the Hariraya. DTP
was later solely directed by Radaic or Basilio (Steve Villaruz), carrying on Ballet at
the (Rizal) Park for more than 12 years and producing ballerinas Anna Villadolid,
Lisa Macuja and Eloisa Enerio. Still later, the Dance Concert Company of Vella
Damian and Eric Cruz, and Manila Metropolis Ballet of Elejar and Toby Fabella
served the widening audience for ballet. This was also met by visiting companies
from Asia, Australia, the United States, Britain, Europe and Russia.

With the opening of Meralco Theater and the Cultural Center of the Philippines,
still later of the restored Manila Metropolitan, U.P. and Camp Aguinaldo Theaters,
choreographic ambitions were no better served than in the old Far Eastern
University, Philamlife and Girls Scouts of the Philippines auditorium, and the
defunct Rizal Theater.

Starting as a private group called Alice Reyes and Modern Dance Company, Ballet
Philippines had the advantage as resident dancers of the CCP. Reyes (starting with
Elejar as co-director) built a modern repertoire with her Amada, Itim Asu, Rama
Hari, Carmen, choreographers Elejar, Fabella, Gener Caringal and Norman Walker,
and the ballet classics with foreigners, especially William Morgan and the Russians.
Subsequent directors were Edna Vida, Denisa Reyes, Agnes Locsin–all
choreographers in their own right, and now Cecile Sicangco. In 1987, CCP
accommodated Philippine Ballet Theater who came under the directorship
of Manosa, Borromeo, Elejar and now Caringal. The Company’s strength had been
its wide choice of local choreographers. In 1966, a splinter group from PBT formed
Ballet Manila with Cruz and Macuja as directors. It espouses Russian style,
although it has lately acquired works from David Campos, Vida, Fabella, Nonoy
Froilan and Osias Barroso. All these companies have won merits in performances
abroad. They have toured nationwide, following the pioneering work of Kane and of
Fe Sala Villarica in the Visayas.

15
In the idiom of jazz, Douglas Nierras and his Powerdance are the most prominent,
following the groups Hotlegs, of Julie Borromeo, Metropolitan Dance Theater, etc.
The new groups are Whiplash and several others dancing for television. They have
graced the shows of Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor and Sharon Cuneta, following up
those of Pilita Corrales, Nida Blanca and Nestor de Villa in their time. Television
has also provided exposure for the popularization of ballroom dancing, earlier
served by Dance Time with Chito (Feliciano) and the Penthouse editions. The Dance
Sports Council has also helped standardize dance competitions and dance
instructions.

In dance education, physical education departments continue to teach dance

(mostly folk) from the grade school to college level. Dance degree programs are
offered at University of the Philippines and De la Salle University. In addition to the
workshops of the Dance Committee of the National Commission for Culture and the
Arts, the Philippine Folk Dance Society, Dance Educators Associations of the
Philippines and Francisca Reyes Aquino Memorial Foundation also offer annual
workshops.

During the leisure time Filipinos can be found dancing more. This include
the battalas (choreographed skirmishes) in the moro-moro or comedia that still
exist, and in many festivals around the country like thesinulog, ati-
atihan, caracol, guling-guling, dinagyang, sayaw sa Obando, turumba in Pakil, etc.
These may be found on the streets, the stage or the shopping malls today.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES

Contemporary dance styles and techniques combine the discipline, control and
poise of more traditional dance forms with the free movement and spatial
expansion of modern, experimental dance modes. Adults and children alike can
gain fluidity of movement, greater understanding of improvisation and the freedom
to express themselves individually and in groups, through dance. Adults who have
enjoyed classical dance styles, ballroom dancing, tap and jazz dance often report
improved muscular flexibility and responsiveness when they participate in
contemporary dance classes and groups. Children who learn modern dance modes
along with their studies of traditional dances strengthen their bodies while gaining
essential understanding of varied dance styles. While combining the practice of
classical dance patterns and steps with free-form movement on smooth, open
dance floors, they are encouraged to engage in creative, experimental dance.

MODERN-DAY DANCE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES FOR BETTER STUDENT

SKILLS AND ENJOYMENT
Contemporary dance techniques and forms that enhance and strengthen the skills,
understanding and enjoyment of dancers of all ages include the following:

Hip Hop. - This lively, upbeat form of dance invites and encourages students to
use their own unique innovative skills and sensibilities to add creative style and
spark to this creative form of choreography. Its varied, energetic rhythms are
inspiring to all, including beginning students, making it nearly impossible to stand
still once the music starts. Both experienced dancers and new students find this
dance style a delightful way to participate and learn on their feet, gaining limber
muscles, movement skills and pure, free enjoyment while practicing Hip Hop with
their fellow students and friends.

16
Zumba. - Both teenagers and adults find this type of dance captivating and
enjoyable. Popular at many parties and other social events, Zumba is based on
Latin rhythms and movements. Advanced students of this dance form often
perform strenuous moves that combine studied choreography and individualized
dance patterns and steps. Due to the sometimes athletic stamina, skill and body
strength necessary to perform some of the more advanced and complex moves and
sequences of this dance, it is often considered an ideal form of exercise.

Modern Improvisation. - This contemporary dance mode is designed to help

students gain greater awareness of the space around them as they move freely
about the dance floor, experimenting with flexible, creative body shapes,
movements and choreography. Modern music modes that accompany this
improvisational dance encourage dancers of all levels of skill to reach new levels of
achievement in using their bodies as fluid, unlimited instruments to form new
spatial patterns and artistic statements with relaxed yet dynamic and ever-evolving
forms of movement
