RATIO & PROPORTION

- BY YASH JAIN
DEFINITION OF RATIO
What is a Ratio ?
What is a Ratio ?
For Example: Popatlal purchased dozen of lemon
worth Rs. 20 and dozen of apples worth Rs. 100.
Now suppose we need to compare the cost of
apples and lemon.
Therefore, Cost of Apples/ Cost of Lemons = 100/20
=5
Hence we can conclude that apples are 5 times
more expensive than lemon.
PROPERTIES OF RATIO
Properties of Ratio

Ratio remains unchanged if both

antecedent and consequent are multiplied
by same number.
Equivalent Ratio Property
▸ Examples:

>
Que: If p:q = r:s = t:u = 2:3 then what is the value of (p+r+t) / (q+s+u)?
Que: If p:q = r:s = t:u = 2:3 then what is the value of (p+r+t) / (q+s+u)?
Que: If p:q = r:s = t:u = 2:3 then
what is the value of
(mp+nr+ot) : (mq+ns+ou)?
Que: If a:b = c:d = 2:3 then what is the value of
(ab+cd) / (b2 + d2) ?
TYPES OF RATIOS
15
1:8
IMPORTANT:

Inverse ratio of a:b will be b:a

But inverse ratio of a:b:c will NOT be c:b:a

Inverse ratio of a:b:c will be (1/a):(1/b):(1/c) that is bc:ac:ab

(No need to memorize this formula, inverse ratio can be easily

found by taking the LCM)
Example:

Inverse ratio of 3:4:6 will be 1/3 : 1/4 : 1/6

(LCM of denominators, that is LCM of 3,4 and 6 will be 12, so

multiply the whole equation by 12),

so inverse ratio will be 12/3 : 12/4 : 12/6 that is 4:3:2

Compound Ratio / Compounded Ratio / Mixed Ratio
For two or more ratios, if we take antecedent as product of antecedents of
the ratios and consequent as product of consequents of the ratios, then the
ratio thus formed is called mixed or compound ratio.

As, compound ratio of m : n and p : q is mp : nq.

In other words,

When two or more ratios are multiplied term wise, the ratio thus obtained
is called compound ratio. 19
Compound Ratio / Compounded Ratio / Mixed Ratio
For example:

The compounded ratio of the two ratios a : b and c : d is the ratio ac : bd, and that
of a : b, c : d and e : f is the ratio ace : bdf.

For ratios m : n and p : q; the compound ratio is (m × p) : (n × q).

For ratio m : n, p : q and r : s; the compound ratio is (m × p × r) : (n × q × s).
