.
(iii) using 1 (b) (ii) above, what will be the new frequency of a pipe whose original frequency was 256Hz if the air
density falls by 2% and the air pressure increases by 1%?

v
(b) (i) In long jumps does it matter how high you jump?
(ii) State the factors which determine the span of the jump

lp
. (iii) Derive an expression that relates the span of the jump and the factors you have mentioned in 2 (b) (ii)
(c) A bullet whose mass is 15g is fired horizontally into a 3kg block of wood suspended by a long cord. The
bullet sticks in the block. Compute the initial velocity of the bullet if the block impact causes the block to swing
10cm above the initial rate

o
3. (a) Show that the period of a body of mass M revolving in a horizontal circle with constant velocity v at

o
the end of a string of length L is independent of the mass of the object
(b) A ball of mass 100gm is attached to the end of a string and is swung in a circle of radius 100cm at a constant

h
velocity of 200cm/s, while in motion the string is shortened to 50cm. Calculate

calculate the total energy needed to raise a satellite of mass 2000kg into orbit at an altitude of 8000km.

5. (a) A small garden shed has a horizontal flat roof of area 2.0m2. During a heavy storm, 500 rain drops
per second fall vertically onto the roof without bouncing. The rain runs off the roof and does not accumulate.
The average mass of a drop is 3.0x10-5kg; the average speed of a drop is 17.0ms-1
(i) What is the change in momentum of one drop as it hits the roof?
(ii) Hence, calculate the mean pressure caused by rain hitting the roof
(iii) In another storm, wind causes rain drops to hit the roof at an angle of 30º to the vertical. The
same number of drops land per second, still at the same speed relative to the roof and the rains run
off the roof. State and explain whether the pressure will be greater than, equal to, or less than the
pressure caused by the vertical rainfall in part 5 (a) (ii)
(b) Define the following terms as used in projectile motion
