Solution for stoichiometry numerical from tropical test.

Ethanol is manufactured from glucose, C6H12O6, by fermentation according to the

following equation.
3
C6H12O6 → 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Glucose Ethanol
a i In an experiment, 45.0 g of glucose was fermented.
[1]
Calculate the number of moles of glucose in 45.0 g. 45/180=0.25 moles
ii Calculate the maximum mass of ethanol that could be obtained from 45.0 g of glucose.—

Stoichiometric ratio between Gl & Eh 1:2 i/e 1 mole of Gl gives 2 moles of Ethanol, 0.25 moles f Gl
[2]
will give 2x0.025= 0.5 moles of ethanol. Molar mass of ethanol = 46

∴Mass of ethanol = No. of moles x molar mass of ethanol = 0.5x46 =23 g

iii Calculate the volume, mass in grams and number of moles of carbon dioxide at room
temperature and pressure that can be obtained from 30.0 g of glucose.

30.0 g of glucose = 30/180 = 0.167 moles.

[2]
Stoichiometric ratio between Gl & CO2 = 1:2 i.e. 0.167 : 0.333moles [1]
Mass of CO2 = 0.333x44= 14.67 g Volume of CO2 = 0.333x 24.0 = 7.99 dm3

b Iron (III) sulphate decomposes when heated.

Fe2(SO4)3(s) Fe2O3 (s) + 3SO3 (g)

i Calculate the mass of iron (III) oxide formed and the volume of sulphur trioxide produced when 10.0
grams of iron (III) sulphate was heated.

Mass of one mole of Fe2 (SO4)3 is 400 g.

Moles of of iron(III) sulphate = 10/400= 0.025 moles

Stoichiometric ratio between Iron(III) sulphate & iron(III) oxide is 1:1 i.e. 0.025 :0.025

Molar mass of iron(III) oxide Fe2O3 = 160

Mass of Fe@O3 = 0.025 x 160 = 4.0 grams

Stoichiometric ratio between Iron(III) sulphate & SO3(g) 1:3 i.e. [1 : 0.025x3] =[1: 0.075]

Number of moles of SO3 produced = 0.075 moles

Volume of sulphur trioxide at r.t.p. = 0.075 x 24 = 1.8 dm3

ii Molar mass of Fe2(SO4)3 = 400 given 0

iii Number of moles of Fe2(SO4)3 = 0.025 moles [1]
iv Molar mass of Fe2O3 = 160 [1]

v Number of moles of Fe2O3 formed = 0.025moles [1]
