Over the course of the last 40 to 50 years. Yes, it’s been that long Man kind has enjoyed a new form of
entertainment the Video Game. I would like to take you through the history and evolution of games over
the decades from pong on the living room TV to VR setups. In this paper I will show you how far the
industry has come, some of its major break throughs and accomplishments,

Pong and the early games

Pong was created in 1972 its widely regarded as the first video game. it was sold in stores
worldwide and was a smash it on the market created by a man by the name of Nolan Bushnell
founder of Atari. Who would go on to produce one of the first ever consoles the original Atari
gaming system.

Arcades
Over the years as the games advanced the concepts of business took root in the game industry
not just in studios and developers who made them but in places to go and enjoy the games most
of the hardware at the time was far too large to be a home system and also far to expensive but
they arcade cabinet was first put on the scene in 1972 also as the pong arcades had already
existed for some time but the edition of the video game was a ground breaking advancement
and soon whole arcades through the 70’s and 80’s would devote themselves to the cabinets
alone rather than the older games or pinball machines of the past.
Body 2 The pcs invention and home consoles
The home console started with the pre mentioned Atari in 1974 when pong was introduced as a
home console how ever in 1983 a newer gen console hit the market and changed it forever the
NES or Nintendo entertainment system and its adaptation of the arcade classics super Mario
brothers a character for their previous cabinet games. The systems ran on game cartridges and
new game should be bought and made by the studios to make the system have hours of play
time on hand the atria used a similar system but with the hardware upgrade the NES was a hit
and by 19191 had sold 30 million units. Companies like Microsoft and Sony would join the
console race later in the start of the next century but before their time Microsoft would change
the game forever
The home PC or personal computer was invented by Bill Gates in 1975 it was a revolution in the
business world and replaced a lot of practices it was a marvel but it also meant that computers
were no longer just for offices and government projects the average American consumer now
had access to the still young internet for one of the first times and with that came a wave of
creativity and innovation. In 1977 with the assistance of flop disc technology the game Oregon
trial was brought on the PC as a text based choice game where you could choose the actions of a
group of settlers on the western frontier a similar game Based on the hobbit would come out as
well I created a new kind of video game one on the computer you could play anywhere as long
as you had the internet you could play . This led to in 1978 the game Empire went live an online
multiplayer game that could be played with other people around the world.
After its humble beginnings in the mid 70’s the PC industry is now a multi-Billion dollar market
with hundreds of companies not only making games programs and software but entire business
founded on making hardware and parts for computers specifically designed for Gaming. The
gaming PC became popular in the early 2000’s and after the launch of the gaming studio Valve’s
new online game store Steam games were more accessible than ever and easier to play being
downloaded of the store like a console instead of going to buy a disk to paly in a cd drive. Today
Steam is still a Titan of its industry with the largest online consumer base along side Epic Games
and Ubisoft’s U-play store and many other studios run purchasing platforms. Gaming has come
along way form arcades and huge cartridges and with the tech advancing daily we do not know
what the future will hold. 10 years ago, VR was since fiction now it is the spotlight project for the
gaming world and has millions being funded into making games and tech to make it even better.

In this paper I have shown the origins and past of video games its steady climbs into the spotlight of
popularity and new advancements the future holds. I hope that everyone who enjoys this hobby has
gained a better understanding of the humble beginnings of this amazing industry. Game over
