Writing a thesis Statement

1. What is thesis statement?

An essential part of any essay is the thesis statement. The thesis statement
explains the writer's position about the topic. It tells the general topic, gives details of
specific aspects of the topic that will be discussed, and provides a blueprint for the
organization of the entire essay. Although the location of a thesis statement can vary,
the most common location is the last sentence in the introductory paragraph.
Topic: cell phones in school
Thesis statement: Student use of cell phones in schools should be prohibited.
Note that the topic does not usually show the writer's idea or position. However,
the writer's opinion is clearly contained in the thesis statement. In this case, the main
idea that controls the thesis statement is the word prohibited. As a result, we expect the
essay to contain reasons that support the prohibition of cell phone use in schools (Folse,
2014).
Moreover, the thesis statement us usually the last part of the introduction. It is
usually one sentence. In the thesis statement, the writer tells the reader what to expect
in the essay. Basically, there are two kinds of thesis statements direct and indirect.
Thesis may also be called stated and implied thesis statements.)
a. Direct Thesis statement. Some writers want to give a specific outline of their
essays in their thesis statements. Read the following example:
The main problems facing this nation are a lack of job
opportunities for citizens, government corruption, and
limited university programs for poor students.
From this statement, the reader know that the body of the essay has three
main parts. The first part will discuss job opportunities, the second part will
talk about government corruption, and the last part will talk about university
programs for poor students. This kind of thesis is called a stated thesis.
b. Indirect Thesis Statement. Ither writers are not so direct. Discussing a similar
topic as the previous example, these writers might use this statement:
There are three important problems facing the nation
today that require immediate attention.

From this statement, the reader expects to find a discussion of problems in

his or her country. The reader is not given the specific information that will
follow in the essay, but the general topic is clear. In this case, the reader
must continue reading to find the supporting ideas of the argument. This
kind of thesis statement is called an indirect thesis.

Thesis Statement: While home industry provides economic opportunities and
promotes self-sufficiency for villagers, its lack of regulation and limited market access
can hinder growth and sustainability, ultimately impacting the overall development
of rural communities.

Supportive Arguments:
1. Home industries allow villagers to earn income from the comfort of their homes,
reducing the need to migrate to urban areas for employment.
2. These small-scale businesses contribute to local economies and help in preserving
traditional crafts and skills within the community.
3. Home industry fosters a sense of entrepreneurship and empowerment among
villagers, leading to increased social and economic independence.

Negative Arguments:
1. The lack of regulation in home industries can lead to quality control issues, posing
potential health and safety risks for consumers.
2. Limited market access and competition with larger commercial enterprises may
restrict the growth and profitability of home-based businesses.
3. Home industries may face challenges in scaling up production, accessing
resources, and adapting to changing market demands, which can hinder their long-
term sustainability.
