To Calculate the Number Of Fans

First We need to calculate the Number Of Zones = Total Area / 4000
If Number of Zones ≤ 1 we will need only 2 Fans (Stand-by Fan & Duty Fan)
If Number of Zones ≥ 1 we will need 2 Fans (Stand-by Fan & Duty Fan) For each Zone
Example
If The Total Area of a Garage = 7000 m2 , So the number of Fans = …… For Total Area
Solution
Number of Zones = 7000/4000 = 1.75 Number of Zones ≥ 1
So, we will need Four fans (2 Stand-by Fans & 2 Duty-Fans) For Total Area
For each Zone which has an Area = 3500 m2 we will need 2 Fans ( Stand-by Fan & Duty-Fan )

EXHAUST SYSTEM DESIGN

For Fan air Flow & ESP selection (Fire Case)

Air Flow Exhaust (CFM) = ( ACH * Volume (m3) ) / 1.7 ACH = 10
For Duct Sizing air Flow (Normal Case)
Air Flow Exhaust (CFM) = ( ACH * Volume (m3) ) / 1.7 ACH = 6

FRESH SYSTEM DESIGN

First we need to calculate the speed of the Air at the Ramp From Relation
Q supply = V supply * A ramp
Where:
Q : Air Flow supply (CFM)
V : Air Velocity at the inlet of the ramp (fpm)
A : Area of the Ramp (ft2)
Q supply = Air Flow Fresh (CFM) = 0.80 : 0.95 of Air Flow (CFM) Exhaust in normal Case
• In case of Ramp Air Speed < 2.5 m/s
We are not in need of Fresh Air System

• In case of Ramp Air Speed > 2.5 m/s

We need to design Fresh Air System

For Fan selection & Duct Sizing air Flow

Air Flow (CFM) Fresh = 0.80 : 0.95 of Air Flow (CFM) Exhaust in normal Case

Page | 2
EXAMPLE

We have a garage of an Area = 1068 m2 & Height = 3.73 m & Ramp area = 8.86 m2

SOLUTION

Factor [F] = Total Area / 4000 = 1068 / 4000 = 0.27

F ≥ 1 then the number of fans equal 2 Fans (One in Service & One for Duty)

EXHAUST SYSTEM DESIGN

Area = 1068 m2 & Height = 3.73 m we will get the Volume = A * H = 1068 m2 x 3.73 m = 3983.6 m3

Fan selection air Flow (Fire Case)

Air Flow (CFM) = (10 * Volume) / 1.7 ACH = 10 * 3983.6 /1.7 = 23432 CFM ≃ 24000 CFM

Duct Sizing air Flow (Normal Case)

Air Flow (CFM) = (ACH * Volume) / 1.7 ACH = 6 * 3983.6 / 1.7 = 14100 CFM ≃ 14700 CFM

FRESH SYSTEM DESIGN

Air Flow (CFM) Fresh = 0.80 : 0.95 of Air Flow (CFM) Exhaust in normal Case = 0.95 * 14100 = 13395 CFM
Q Fresh (CFM) = V fresh (fpm) * A ramp (ft2) V = Q / A = 13395 / 95.3 = 140.55 fpm = 0.71 m/s

The Velocity at the inlet of the ramp < 2.5 m/s

So We are not in need of Fresh Air System
