WHAT IS RESEARCH?
Lecture #1
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 By the end of this lesson, you will be able

to:
➢ Define the concept of research
➢ Recognize the importance of research
➢ Know the principles of research ethics

Objectives
OVERVIEW

▪ Research methodology is like the backbone of

any research project.
▪ A research project can't succeed without a solid
methodology.
▪ It's the route (path) you take, the steps you
follow, and the tools you use to find answers.

Introduction
OVERVIEW

 At each step in the research process you are

required to choose from a variety of methods,
procedures and models of research
methodology ………..which will help you to
best achieve your objectives.

Introduction
‘RESEARCH’

 The term ‘Research’ consists of two words:

 Re/search ═ RE (a prefix) ➕ Search ( a verb)

 “RE” means again or over again and “search” means to

examine closely and carefully.
 Together, they form a noun describing a search for
knowledge or any systematic investigation to establish
facts or principles.

DEFINITIONS OF RESEARCH?

 The research is a process of which a

person (researcher) observes the
phenomena again and again, collects data,
analyse data and draws conclusions based
on evidence..

DEFINITIONS OF RESEARCH?

▪ Research is a systematic and scholarly

application of scientific methods seeking
out knowledge.
▪ This knowledge can be new, or
▪ it can support an already known fact,

WHY SHOULD WE CARE?

 Simply, research is:

▪ A way of thinking
▪ an integral part of your practice
▪ your day-to-day professional work.

process
 Obtaining appropriate approvals
from ethics committees
 Addressing any ethical concerns
that arise during the course of the
research.
