Sheet (1)
1) A 2 pole, 60 Hz, star-connected, AC machine, has a rotor field winding with distributed
turns Nf =46 and winding factor Kf =0.90 and an armature winding on the stator with series
turns /phase Na =24and winding factor Ka =0.833. The rotor length is l = 4.0m, the rotor
radius is r = 0.5 m and air-gap length is g = 0.075 m, and the field current If =1500 A.
Compute :
(a) The peak fundamental mmf produced by the field winding.
(b) The peak fundamental air-gap flux density.
(c) The fundamental air-gap flux per pole.
(d) The rms value of the open circuit voltage generated in the armature.

2) A 4 pole, 60 Hz, star-connected, AC machine, has a rotor field winding with a total of 120
series turns and a winding factor Kf = 0.92. The rotor length is 2.1m, the rotor radius is
45cm and air-gap length is 3.0 cm. To achieve a peak fundamental air-gap flux density of
1.3 T, Calculate :
(a) The rotor winding current.
(b) The corresponding fundamental air-gap flux per pole.
(c) The rms value of the open circuit voltage generated in the armature if the armature
winding has 16 series turns per phase and a winding factor K a = 0.94.

3) A 2-pole, 60 Hz,3-phase AC machine has a rotor length of 7.1in,a rotor radius of 2.25 in
and an air-gap length of 0.010 in, the rotor field winding has 248 turns and a winding factor
of 0.95.the armature winding consists of 60 turns / phase with a winding factor of 0.93.
(a) Calculate the flux per pole and peak fundamental air-gap flux density for an
armature voltage of 120 V rms /phase
(b) Calculate the dc field current in amperes required to achieve conditions of part (a).

4) A 3-phase, 50Kw, 4-pole, 50 Hz, AC machine, its winding is designed in delta connected
and has 24 conductor per slot, arranged in 60 slots. Its winding factor equal 0.96. The rms
value of line current is 48 A. Find:
(a) The peak fundamental mmf wave of phase A.
(b) The peak fundamental air-gap flux density if air-gap length is 0.005 m.

(c) The fundamental air-gap flux per pole if the rotor length is 3 m and the rotor radius is
45cm.

5) Prove that a pulsating magnetic field will be produced when the single phase armature
winding of AC machine is supplied by single phase current. Then show that a pulsating
magnetic field is equivalent to two rotating field, each of half the magnitude of the
pulsating field, rotating in opposite direction.

6) Prove that a rotating magnetic field will be produced when the 3 phase armature winding of
AC machine is supplied by 3- phase balanced current. Then show that the direction of
rotation of the rotating field can be reversed by interchanging the supply to any two
phases.

7) In a balanced two-phase machine supplied by a balanced 2-phase supply of frequency ( f )

Hz, prove that the resultant mmf of such machine, has a constant amplitude equals the
maximum mmf of one phase and has an angular speed of 2 f rad/sec.
