WHAT ARE BARRIERS

Barriers are the factors resulting


in misinterpretation and
miscommunication. It obstructs
the smooth flow of
communication.
REASONS FOR BARRIERS

• There are four levels where the


problems may arise.
1. The Senders level
2. The Receivers level
3. The Transmission level
4. The Feedback reaction level.
THE SENDERS LEVEL:

• In formulating the message ideas messages

• Organizing the thoughts

• Encoding the message( choosing the words


symbols mode of delivery.
THE RECEIVERS LEVEL

• In receiving the message

• Decoding

• Interpreting
TRANSMISSION LEVEL

• Noise

• Faulty instruments
FEEDBACK LEVEL

• Limited processing capability

• Choice of medium and channel

• Reaction or response.

• Barriers can be basically divided into 5 basic types.


1. Cross cultural Barriers
2. Physical Barriers
3. Semantic Barriers
4. Socio Psychological Barriers
5. Organizational Barriers
CROSS CULTURAL BARRIER

Cultural differences increases the problems of


communication.
Same category symbols, words, phrases, actions
colors, differ in meaning
Culture is a part of human behavior and it is
reflected in talking behaving thinking
WHAT IS A CULTURE

Culture is a shared set of values


and attributes of a group. It is
the sum total of the ways of
living built by group of people
and transmitted from one
generation to another.

• Circular/ linear
• Time orientation/ past, present, future
• Time is money
• Punctuality and Scheduling
• Work time/ personal time

• Physical handicap
• Faulty instruments
SEMANTIC OR LANGUAGE
BARRIER
• Different languages
• Living nature of language
• Words with multiple meanings Eg. Ring, Cat, Fast, Head, Spirit,
Mark, Charge
• Words with similar spellings and different meanings and
pronouncing. Eg. Minute, Wind
• Homophones Eg. Cite Site
• Descriptive adjectives. Eg. Beautiful, Far
• Technical jargons
