Have you ever felt like you’re not the same you anymore?

To the point that you’re losing

interest to the things that you used to love? Or you’re not that excited anymore about discovering new
things? I am Princess, and today I want to tackle about what it feels like to suffer from depression.

Depression is not always easy to identify. Many teenagers among these days would always
complain about their mental health, and most of the time their parents would say “arte mo lang ‘yan”
“wala namang ganiyan noong panahon namin” and those words would definitely hit them so hard and
can lead them to a depression. Not all the people in our country are mindful about “anxiety”,
“depression” and many more. The ignorance about these topics could lead them to be insensitive with
the people who’s suffering from these. For example, you’re out with your friends and you saw someone
who’s eating alone by themselves, and because of not knowing what they really feel, you started making
fun of them; you started calling them a “weirdo” or a “loner”, and with that it added more to their
depression, they will feel like their feelings are not validated in this society. By that, they will suffocate
themselves more inside their room and would refuse to socialize with people or to communicate about
what they feel, because they have that fear that they can be invalidated by blind people; and one of
those blind people can be their parents. Due to the fact that they are not open about this thing, because
for them consulting a psychologist is like admitting that there is something wrong about you. But, let us
also talk about what are the reasons why a person is depressed.

One factor of depression is a negative parenting; physical abuse, neglection, and emotional
abuse, are the most serious and damaging behavior traits. Physical abuse is an intentional injury which
can caused by their anger or because of something they did that pissed them off. Neglection is when a
parent is failing to give a child its basic needs such as food, shelter and clothes. Emotional abuse includes
non-physical injuries but meant to frighten you; a range of words or behaviors used to manipulate,
intimidate, and maintain power and control over someone. Verbal abuse involves using words to name
call, bully, demean, or control another person. This can include overt verbal abuse such as yelling,
screaming, or swearing. Growing up in a verbally abusive family can have a long-lasting effect on your
mental health, it will literally test your patience and will open your eyes about unwanted things on a
young age. Which will cause you to overthink about certain things that seems to be not right and could
possibly lead to depression. Many people will agree but some may not, because we are all not living in
the same household, and we didn’t grow up on the same way. And because of being depressed inside
their home, how can it affect their studies?

With so many teens who have undiagnosed anxiety or depression, this can negatively impact
their ability to learn and enjoy their time in school. When students have anxiety and depression that
goes unnoticed their mental health is at risk, which can lead to social and behavioral problems, poor
performance and learning, neglected hygiene, poor self-care practices and low self-esteem. It can be
hard for teachers to identify depression and anxiety, because these disorders can be seen on different
people. They may be laughing so hard with their friends but actually they are breaking down when they
are home. They may be the joker or the happiest friend you’ve ever had, but they can also be the friend
who’s suffering really hard. They come to school just to escape from that traumatic home or they want
to heal that inner child of them. We do not know what is someone’s going through right now, it might
be something that they want to cherish forever or something that they want to forget for the rest of
their lives. So, if we have the chance to talk to the people who’s suffering in silence, let’s try our best to
make them feel that they are wanted; you don’t need to give them advice, they just need someone to
listen to them and to make them feel that there is someone for them.

To wrap it up, mental health is a serious issue that affects everyone. Whether we are dealing
with mental health concerns ourselves or known someone who is, we must take action. That is why I
want to encourage each of you to take care of your own mental health by seeking the assistance you
require to get through difficult times. Like John Greek said, “It’s important to talk about mental illness
because people are suffering and we’re not doing enough to help them.” Let us all be inspired by this to
take action to promote mental health. Let us break the stigma, promote awareness, and help those who
are struggling.
