ULTRAV: Smart Bag with Theft Prevention and Real Time Tracking

Introduction
The bloom of low-cost airlines has facilitated frequent flying. By the end of this year,
people will have taken almost 4 billion flights worldwide (compared to 3.7 billion in 2016) and
checked in more than 4.5 billion bags. As a result, travelers should be ready to deal with the
consequences, such as increased workload for luggage handling systems and, unfortunately,
bigger chances of their baggage getting lost or damaged. The fate of your luggage during your trip
depends on many factors: departure and arrival country, the airline you are flying with, luggage
handling standards at the particular airport and - in many cases - pure luck.
Overall, nearly 14,000 travelers each year report items missing from their luggage, but these
figures do not account for the true total of thefts because the process of reporting these crimes is
cumbersome and time-consuming and many travelers discover the theft much later in their trip.
Aside from security problems in luggage, travellers also experienced a difficult time of bringing
their luggage in rough areas especially in a not cemented road, and substandard suitcases usually cannot
handle this kind of road condition.
In view of these, our group proposed a product that will change the travellers’ experience when
it comes to travelling with their luggage. The all new Ultrav Smart Bag is designed in such a way that it
is lightweight luggage which is modified with advanced electronic technology for the purpose of
advanced security system and also made the human travelling facilities more efficient with less effort. It
includes GPS module for tracing and tracking the bag in case of misplace or loosing. It is also secured
with two-factor authentication system which has fingerprint locking system and PIN code as alternative.
Aside of that, it can be named as the best slash-resistant bags because it is reinforced with a material
made from UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) and other technical fibers that are
tightly woven together on a high speed knitting machine. The fabric that is the outcome of this process
is rated at the highest cut rating possible - a Level 5. This makes our smart bag to be nearly impossible
for a thief to rip open quickly with a knife. The most advanced airline approved luggage that was ever
own. Featuring shark wheels, instead of traditional round wheels, it is best for swiveling, rough terrain,
and lightweight.
For customers choice, our smart bag comes with different colors so that buyers can have multiple
choices in their best preference, considering their chosen outfits and style.
Background of the Problem
Travelling can be either a joy or pain, and the luggage you use to tote your stuff is one of the
biggest factors in determining which. While manufacturers have made advancements in materials and
design, suitcases really haven’t changed much since their modern inception in the early 1900s.
Generally, for travelling purposes, people uses normal luggage bags or suitcase, but in today’s world,
such type of bags are not safe from the security point of view and less hard work and comfort of having
better journey. But luggage is finally getting smarter, and the options for connected suitcases and related
gadgets are beginning to take hold. From built-in scales to GPS tracking and mobile apps, these
innovations won’t make luggage any lighter, but they could make the traveling experience less
harrowing. Nowadays, field of electronics has designed with advanced electronic technology that can
provide facilities like surveillance. All the electronic inventions are to reduce manual effort upon
mechanical work and to create an interaction between human and machine.
This paper suggests a new technology that will address some of the possible challenges that
travellers might experience along their trip. It is a smart bag that covers an application-specific design
that can be useful for almost everyone in the society. Smart means intelligent, and the bag is intended to
be enough in carrying out various features for everyday use.

Design Thinking
Phase 1
Upon planning of the product that we are going to design, each one of us has different ideas and
concepts. But in order to sustain the needs, we shared our different knowledge to have a mutual
understanding. We think of certain problem that is common to our generation. We discussed some
certain situation that could possibly relate to our design product. Somehow, we tried to put ourselves in
each other’s shoe, so that there is an equal treatment between all the members. We combined all creative
ideas that could help achieve our design product.

Phase 2
Nowadays, developing a product is very challenging, where technologies are broad and almost
everything is being innovated. Somehow, we challenge ourselves to face any problems that we might
possibly face. During our sharing of ideas and concepts, our main problem is thinking how we are going
to apply each idea that is being shared, on what ideas should be applied first. Although, we agreed in
some ideas, some suggested the innovation of technology with our product, the materials or equipment
that should be use.
Phase 3
In order to understand each ideas and concepts, we have done brainstorming process in which it
can help us to be more creative in such way. We combined the entire possible situation that our product
will encounter before we come up to our design product. We discuss further about the materials, quality,
quantity, and the relevance of our product to our generation. We are open for any suggestions which we
think that could help our product innovated. Nevertheless, we have done so much effort to think of what
is best for our product.

Model Design
GPS Tracker - GPS tracking uses a network of satellites to determine the location of a device that was
specifically designed for that purpose. The basic idea is that a GPS tracker uses a process called
trilateration to determine its physical location based on its distance from three GPS satellites.

a) GPS Processor or Receiver - The processor or receiver, as the name suggests, tracks the
satellite and in turn, find out the user’s location.
b) Processing Unit - The processing unit gives you the map. It connects the satellite
coordinates with the location and shows you the area around you in the form of a map. Such
can further help you look for the best route to your destination.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) - UHMWPE is a subset of a thermoplastic

polyethylene. It has extremely long chains resulting in a very tough material, with high impact
strength. Its coefficient of friction is comparable to that of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) but it has
better abrasion resistance.

Shark Wheel - is a wheel company that specializes in a new type of wheel that is faster, smoother,
longer lasting and is all superior on all terrain. Why we chose this?

a) More Grip & Slide Control - The width is increased, but the friction is decreased! The sine
wave design provides three lips per wheel for superior lateral grip. When you want to slide,
they break away smoothly and recover easily.
b) Less Friction, More Speed - The wave pattern design allows for a thin contact patch
touching the ground and therefore less friction, resulting in a quicker ride.
c) More Traction Over Various Terrains - The alternating pattern of grooves significantly
reduces hydroplaning by channeling liquid, sand or gravel out and away from the surface of
the wheel, allowing for a firm contact patch with the ground.
Two-Factor Authenticator - sometimes referred to as two-step verification or dual factor
authentication, is a security process in which the user provides two different authentication factors to
verify themselves to better protect both the user's credentials and the resources the user can access.

a) Fingerprint Scanner - is a type of electronic security system that uses fingerprints for
biometric authentication to grant a user access to information or to approve transactions.
b) Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Lock - A luggage lock is a lock used to
prevent luggage from opening by accident, usually with little or no security in mind,
although they may serve as a deterrent to potential thieves. They may be built into luggage or
may be external locks such as padlocks or lockable straps.

c) Mobile Integration

Conclusion
Smart bag is an innovative carry on suitcase that makes life easier and smoother. Carrying
luggage is the main difficulty faced by each and every passenger. Here we try to solve the dragging of
luggage difficulty and also providing better security and intelligent features that suitable for modern era.
In this project, we developed a new low cost technology to assist low cost consumer product
implementation, so that the overall production cost of a smart luggage will be less. The GPS, two-factor
authentication, and anti-theft material could help lessen the possibility of the criminals to do such crime
of stealing our luggage along our trip.
