PASSAGE 1
WHAT HAPPEND?
A tornado hit a small town in Missouri at 9 a.m. yesterday. People said the sky darkened very quickly. The
winds were so strong that trees, cars and even houses were picked up and carried for miles. As local TV and
radio stations had issued an early warning, most of the residents had had time to take shelter underground or
in basements.
A powerful earthquake struck the north-east of Japan at 4 p.m. last Monday. Although Japan has the most
advanced warning system, there had been no early warning for this one and people were not prepared.
Suddenly the ground started moving. The shaking continued for a few minutes and became stronger. People
began running away from buildings as walls started to collapse.
Mount Sinabung in Indonesia erupted again two days ago. From where we were standing, we could see a big
cloud of ash coming from the top of the mountain. As the lava ran down the volcano's sides, it destroyed
everything in its path. By the next morning, several villages around Mount Sinabung were buried in ash and
debris.

EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
A large earthquake could happen in Southern California. Many small earthquakes have happened in the last
year. Earthquake experts think that a large earthquake will happen there soon. They think a big earthquake
will happen in the next few years. A large earthquake in Southern California would destroy energy and water
supplies. Lots of people would be without power or water for weeks. Buildings that have not been built
strong enough would be destroyed. Not all hospitals would be able to help people who were injured. Many
people would die or be homeless.
People need to be prepared. They need to know what to do if an earthquake happens. Everyone in California
should have a survival kit at home. The emergency kit would include food and water. There should be
medication and first aid supplies in the kit. A good survival kit will also have a portable radio, flashlights
and spare batteries. All of the supplies in the kit should last at least 3 days.

PASSAGE 3
FLOODS IN BRITAIN
Floods happen after or during heavy rainfall. This excess of water can damage peoples' property, damage
roads and even wash cars away. Flooding can be very dangerous to people. If flooding happens quickly
without warning, people can sometimes become stranded and have no way of escape. They have to be
rescued from their rooftops or even from car roofs.
A severe weather warning helps prepare people for heavy rain and flooding. People try to protect their
properties using sandbags stacked up against their doors to prevent water coming into their homes. Rivers
can sometimes burst their banks so people living in low lying areas or near rivers are more at risk from
flooding. Often if heavy rain is forecasted, these areas are evacuated before the floods arrive. Some scientists
say that because of global warming, Britain will suffer more heavy rainfall and floods.

disasters. Geological disasters include landslides and volcanic eruptions, just to name a few. The
main hydrological disasters are floods and tsunamis. Typical examples of meteorological disasters
are thunderstorms, droughts and tornadoes. Wildfires are the fourth type of natural disasters which
are also considered to be caused by humans. The last group, space disasters refer to impact events
