“The father and his sons”

“In union, there is strength.”

Aesop

A father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarreling among themselves. When he failed to heal
their disputes by his exhortations, he’s determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for
his purpose, he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the
hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They tried with all their strength, and were
not able to do it. He next opened the faggot, took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into his sons’
hands upon which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in these words: “My sons, if you are of one mind,
and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are
divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks.”

READ THE POEM

“The Outside Inside Poem”

“A joy that’s shared is a joy made double.”

John Ray

Outside, the night sneaks up with cat feet.

Inside, my sisters listen to Chinese love songs on
the radio and sing along like movie stars.
Outside, the snow rests on cars like thick rugs.
Inside, my mother rubs circles on my brother’s
back telling him stories of how she collected
peanuts from the river banks after the
spring floods in Lion Village.
Outside, the stars climb into the cold winter sky.
Inside, my father wraps our holiday presents,
newspaper and scotch tape crunching
behind the door.
Outside, the crescent moon hangs between the branches of a tree.
Inside, I help my grandma make dumplings,
pressing my hands into the warm dough,
22
shaping it into moon-smiles.
Outside, the wind talks stories to the streets.
Inside my family stands at the window, holding hands,
listening to the whispers.
The night rubs against the glass, trying to get in.
