PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT POLICY

Management shall supply free of charge all the necessary personal protective
equipment as required by the risks in the wash bay and as required by any other
contracts.

It is expected from all employees to wear the PPE as instructed and to maintain it
in a good/effective condition.
The abuse or wilful damage, loss of PPE will be recovered from employee’s
income if an accepted reason cannot be provided.
Disciplinary action can be taken against employees who fail to wear their PPE.

The main types of equipment will be discussed here:

Hearing protection.
Noise will always be part of the working environment. It is therefore important to
know about hearing protection and when to use it. If hearing becomes impaired it
cannot be fixed again.

HEARING LOSS IS PERMANENT.

Here is a table to help distinguish what the noise levels in a area can be based
on common sounds.

It is required that hearing protection be warn in areas that is at the threshold

85dB and higher.
Different types of hearing protection are available and some give better
protection than others in a certain environment. Investigate to see what would be
best for you.

Foam ear plugs - These are normally disposable and can only be used a limited
number of times. Fixed plugs - normally fixed and the points that fit in the ear can
be replaced. Normally fits
around the neck.
Ear Muffs - These are also more permanent. Muffs cover the ears and do not
have any part that is inserted into the ear. For very load areas or gun shooting
muffs can be used with foam type plugs inserted in the ear for better protection.
Foot protection

This is of the most important parts of PPE to be used. So important that most
employers do not allow their employees to do any work or enter any working
area without wearing foot protection. There are many types of safety footwear
available. They come in shoes, boots, and takkies.

Eye protection
The eye is the most vulnerable part of the body and should be protected as far
as possible. It takes a very small particle to hit the eye with little force to cause
injury that can lead to loss of sight.
Safety goggles must fits comfortably so that workers will not be tempted to take it
of unnecessarily. It will have side flaps to protect the eyes from particles coming
from the sides. For strenuous tasks in warm environments make use of a type
that have anti fog lenses.
The best protection is a face shield as it protects the whole face. The
disadvantage of the face shield is that the worker will have to remove his or her
hard hat.

Gloves

Hand protection is very important and the appropriate type should be used for
the activity performed.

Leather gloves - Used when machining and grinding. They are also preferred
when welding.
Rubber gloves - For use when handling chemicals and corrosive substances.
They are normally worn during handling of any bio hazardous material.

Overalls, coveralls and aprons

Overalls and coveralls come in different types and colours. Some are
waterproof, some are acid proof and some are resistant to certain chemicals.
Overalls for your workers that are best for the application will be chose.

Masks

When doing activities where there is a risk of breathing in hazardous chemicals

or substances, an appropriate mask should be worn. Make sure the masks your
workers use are the correct ones for the job, and they know how to use them. If
they do use the wrong type, and something hazardous goes into their lungs,
there is no way of getting it out. And due to COVID 19 it is compulsory that all
employees should wear their face masks at all times. Washable face masks shall
be provided minimum of two per person.
