COMPANY NAME:
PPE Can Save Your Life
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) can save your life, but only if you wear it
properly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use, care, and maintenance.
MEETING DATE: There are so many different types of PPE that we can’t review them all today, but
TIME / SHIFT: here are some highlights.
LOCATION: Have you ever seen the Indianapolis 500? If so, you must have noticed that every
CONDUCTED BY: driver wears a helmet. The racer’s helmet protects his or her head from injuries in
a crash or other accident. In the plant, you wear a helmet too—it’s called a hard hat.
Wear your hard hat and wear it correctly. The bill should face forward so it can protect
ATTENDEES:
your face and forehead from falling objects. If you know anyone who escaped serious
injury because he or she was wearing a hard hat, you can nominate him or her to be a
member of the Turtle Club, a group that recognizes the importance of protecting your
head. Ask your co-workers and you’ll probably come across at least one who got a hard
knock to the head and lived to tell the tale—all because he was wearing his hard hat.
Think of all the eye hazards in the plant. From flying shards of metal and noxious
vapors to hot slag to sawdust—lots of things in the plant can fly into your eyes and
blind you before you know it. Eye protection provides a physical barrier for your eyes.
If you need goggles, don’t settle for glasses. Wear the PPE that will protect your vision.
Protect your lungs and respiratory system with vigilance. Use a respirator if you are
working around hazardous chemicals and gases. Be sure to choose a respirator that is
certified to protect you against the contaminant of concern. If you’re working in an
oxygen deficient atmosphere, use a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Whatever respirator you use, make sure that you’ve been properly fit-tested, and that
it is medically safe for you to use the respirator. Wearing a respirator that doesn’t seal
completely to your face, or that puts too much load on your respiratory system can be
just as deadly as not wearing a respirator at all.
Don’t forget your hands. The right pair of gloves will prevent hand injury. Whether you
need protection from cuts, abrasion, vibration, corrosive chemicals, punctures, liquids,
or extreme temperatures, there is a pair of gloves that will protect your hands. Make
sure you find and use the right pair of gloves.
Hardhats, safety glasses, goggles, hoods, fall protection, steel-toed boots, gaiters, shin
guards, gloves, masks, and respirators, these are but a few of the different kinds of PPE
you may need for your job. Protect yourself. Wear your PPE.
Notes
SAFETY REMINDER
PPE is only effective if you
use it and wear it as the
manufacturer intended.
