Assessment 3

Note: This is a fully online module. It is, therefore, only available on myUnisa.

BARCODE
Assignment 3: Compulsory
Contributes 30% to the final pass mark
Unique number: 366454
Due date: 30 July 2024

This assignment encompasses sections of Learning Unit 2, which pertain to accurately

applying key terms, concepts, facts, general principles, rules, and theories in algebraic
procedures. It also encompasses Learning Unit 3, which focuses on identifying and
explicating numeric and geometrical number patterns. These concepts are crucial to
comprehending the often intricate algebraic concept of function.

Instructions
1. Read the questions carefully.
2. Number your answers exactly as the questions are numbered.
3. Start each question on a new page.
4. Show all your working details (calculations).
5. Write legibly and present your work neatly. (It is in your interest to do so.)
6. Remember to complete and sign the honesty declaration before attaching it to your answer script. An
honesty declaration form is attached to the last page of this assignment.

Additional instructions
1. Upload your answer scripts as a single PDF file. (Your answer scripts must not be password-protected or
uploaded as “read-only” files.)
2. We shall accept NO e-mailed scripts.
3. We encourage you to preview your submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility and to ensure that you
upload the correct answer script file.
4. We shall not consider incorrect file format or uncollated answer scripts.
5. We will give a zero mark for incorrect answers and blank scripts, and you cannot resubmit your script.
6. If you submit your script on the wrong module code platform, we will not mark it, and you will not have the
opportunity to resubmit it.
7. The mark awarded for incomplete or illegible scanned submissions will be your final mark.
8. We will only accept submissions from registered student accounts.
9. If we suspect you of dishonesty in your submission, we will initiate disciplinary proceedings against you.
Unisa has zero tolerance for plagiarism and any other form of academic dishonesty.
10. Ensure that you upload your assignment under the correct module code.
11. We shall not consider any incorrect file format or uncollated answer script.

Question 1

1.1 Discuss why it is important for primary school mathematics teachers to be

mindful of how they introduce the concept of the equal sign when learners begin
using symbols for numerical operations. Justify your reasoning using examples.
(10)
1.2 Four people have these amounts of money: 𝑥𝑥, 2𝑥𝑥, 𝑥𝑥 + 12, and 𝑥𝑥 − 3.
1.2.1 Write an algebraic expression that gives the total amount of money they
have. (2)
1.2.2 Write an expression that gives each person’s share if they share the
money equally. (1)
1.2.3 Write an expression that gives the total remaining if each person spends
R15. (4)
1.2.4 If the four people originally had a total of R119, how much did each
person have? (5)
[22]

Question 2
2.1 Dots are arranged to form a pattern

Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 Picture 4

2.1.1 Create a table to represent the pattern for the first five pictures. (6)
2.1.2 Describe how the pattern grows from Picture 1 to Picture 𝑛𝑛 in words. Your
description must relate the picture number and the number of dots. (4)
2.1.3 Determine the expression you would use to calculate the number of dots
in any picture. Show all your work (6)
2.1.4 Show algebraically that it is not possible to find a picture number that has
77 dots. (4)
2.2 Look at the sequence below to answer the questions that follow.
1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21 …
2.2.1 Use the answer to question 2.1.3 to derive the nth term of the sequence (6)
2.2.2 What will term 25 and term 95 be in the sequence? (4)
2.3 Explain how you can use geometric patterns to help learners to understand
functions. (4)
[34]

Question 3

6m x m2

4m
y m2 4m

The diagram shows a plan of two adjoining rooms. You are given some of the lengths,
areas 𝑥𝑥 and 𝑦𝑦. The value of 𝑥𝑥 is the 13th term of the numerical sequence 6, 9, 12, …
and the value of 𝑦𝑦 is the sum of five consecutive numbers such that 46 < 𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 < 67.
3.1 Showing all your work and explaining your thinking and reasoning, find the
3.1.1 value of 𝑥𝑥 (7)
3.1.2 value of 𝑦𝑦. (5)
3.2 Calculate the three possible values of the perimeter of the combined shape and
explain how each perimeter fits the context. (14)
[26]
Question 4
4.1 Jowie takes a board that is 50 cm long and cuts it into two pieces, one of which
is 16 cm longer than the other. How long is each piece? Explain your work and
discuss what thinking skills the learner should have to solve the problem. (6)
4.2 Find all 𝑤𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛 𝑚𝑚 and 𝑛𝑛 that fit the equation 3𝑚𝑚 + 6𝑛𝑛 = 87. Show all
your work. Is it possible to find whole numbers 𝑚𝑚 and 𝑛𝑛 that fit the equation
3𝑚𝑚 + 6𝑛𝑛 = 95? If so, find a pair number of numbers. If not, explain why not. (12)

any credit for all the work concerned. As plagiarism is a severe violation of the University’s regulations,
it can lead to the expulsion of those involved.

The following declaration must accompany any written assignment you submit to the University. We
shall cancel any of your assignments and return them to you unmarked if you omit them, including a
fully completed and signed declaration form.

I, (full names) ……………………………………………………………………….,
