QUESTION 1

Four options are provided as possible answers to the following questions. Each
question has only ONE correct answer. Write only the letter (A–D) next to the
question number (1.1–1.3) in the ANSWER BOOK.

1.1 When light of a certain frequency is incident on the cathode of a photocell, the
ammeter in the circuit registers a reading.

The frequency of the incident light is now increased while keeping the intensity
constant. Which ONE of the following correctly describes the reading on the
ammeter and the reason for this reading?

Ammeter reading Reason

A Increases More photoelectrons are emitted per
second
B Increases The speed of the photoelectrons
increases.
C Remains the same The number of photoelectrons remains
the same.
D Remains the same The speed of photoelectrons remains
(2)
the same.

1.2 Blue light of different intensities is shone onto the cathode of a photo-electric
cell. Photo-electrons are emitted from the cathode. Which ONE of the following
graphs represents the correct relationship between the maximum kinetic energy
of the emitted photo electrons and the intensity of the incident light?
A B

Intensity Intensity
C D

1.3 The simplified diagram below is used to explain how different types of spectra
are formed.

QUESTION 2

The diagram below shows a circuit in which a photocell is irradiated alternately with
red and blue light to demonstrate the photo-electric effect.

Incident light

2.1 Define the term photo electric effect. (2)

2.2 What property of light is illustrated by the photoelectric effect? (1)
2.3 An ammeter reading is recorded when the photocell is irradiated with red light.
Give an explanation for this observation. (2)
2.4 Blue light with the same intensity as the red light is now used to irradiate the
photocell. How will this influence the kinetic energy of the photo-electrons Write
down only INCREASE, DECREASE or STAYS THE SAME. Explain the answer. (2)
2.5 The wavelength of the blue light used in the demonstration is 4,5 x 10-7 m.
Calculate the threshold frequency (cut-off frequency) of the metal used in the
photo cell if the average speed of an emitted photo-electron is equal to
4,78 x 105 m·s-1. (5)

QUESTION 3
Learners investigate the relationship between the maximum kinetic energy of
electrons emitted from the cathode of a photoelectric cell and the frequency of the
incident radiation. The results obtained are plotted on the graph A below.

3.1 Define the term work function. (2)

3.2 Calculate the:
3.2.1 Work function of the metal used as cathode in the photocell. (3)
3.2.2 Velocity of photoelectrons emitted when the frequency of the incident
light is 8 x 1014 Hz. (4)
3.3 The photocell is now replaced with another one in which the work function of the
cathode is TWICE that of the metal in the first cell.
The maximum kinetic energy versus frequency graph, B, for this cathode is now
drawn on the same set of axes as graph A.
3.3.1 How will the gradient of graph B compare to that of graph A? Write down
GREATER THAN, SMALLER THAN or EQUAL TO. Explain the answer. (2)
3.3.2 What will the value of the x intercept of graph B be? Explain the answer. (2)

QUESTION 4

A photodiode consisting of a sodium plate and an anode is connected in a circuit

diagram as shown below.

When the learners shine light on the sodium plate, they observe that the ammeter
connected in the circuit only registers a reading when light with a frequency of 4,389 x 1014
Hz or more shines on the sodium plate.

4.1 Define the term threshold frequency (cut-off frequency). (2)

4.2 Calculate:
4.2.1 The current flowing through the ammeter, if the plate releases 1,01 x 109
photo-electrons per second.
(NOTE: ONE photon releases ONE electron.) (4)
4.2.2 The velocity of an electron that is ejected from sodium if light with a
frequency of 4,83 x 1014 Hz shines on the metal. (6)
4.3 The intensity of ultraviolet light is then increased. State how this change affects
the ammeter reading? Only write down INCREASES, DECREASES or
REMAINES THE SAME. Explain the answer. (3)
