CHANGE OF WATCH ECDIS OPERATION CHECKLIST

Checklist to be completed as Y / N / NA.
As a minimum, the following checks and actions are to be conducted
upon watch handover 04 08 12 16 20 24

Display Mode adjusted accordingly. Day/Night/Brilliance


Check system time is configurated correctly

Ensure that the correct Route is loaded in Route Monitoring

Ensure that the secondary Route is loaded in Route Editor (if required)

If in True Motion, check that the Look Ahead is configured correctly


Verify that the Safety Depth and Safety Contour settings are configured
correctly
Safety setting - depth alarm checked

Safety alarm - safety contour checked

Ensure that the Anti Grounding Cone is set for the prevailing conditions

Ensure that XTD is applied and displayed correctly

Ensure that Vectors are configured correctly

Ensure that chart in use is on the best scale


Ensure that the chart is the most recently corrected ENC available from
installed charts
Interrogate the quality of data and review all Chart Notes

Fix the ships position on ECDIS and prove ECDIS correct

Ensure that the ECDIS inputs is check and recorded

ECDIS alarm not muted

GPS not in Dead Reckoning mode

Status of RADAR/AIS/ARPA Overlay


Check WGS-84 datum in GPS and ECDIS (S63 charts produced in WGS-84
datum)
Check that T&P notices / Navtex / Navarea in force have been actually
Plotted or displayed relevant to the voyage
Check if any new update received, record of updates log and if any errors
were encountered.
Repeat the above steps at the Secondary ECDIS Terminal

If in RCDS mode, confirm the geodetic datum in use

If in RCDS mode, view the source data diagram and review all Chart Notes

If in RCDS mode, ensure that paper backup is correct

OOW INITIALS
The methods to be used for cross-checking are by all other means available such as visual cross bearings, radar position by EBL / VRM, parallel index and use of
clearing bearings, radar overlay on ECDIS or vice versa on the radar. It is important for the navigator to practice all the traditional navigational skills and not to be
overconfident in the use of ECDIS. During the voyage the GPS signal must be monitored.

1. This checklist is to be completed by the Relieving Officer on his taking over the watch and a log entry made.

2. If, at any time of changeover, the OOW is in the process of maneuvering or any other operation, the relief of watch is to be deferred until
such actions are completed*Initialing confirms compliance. If not applicable, enter N/A.
