MATHEMATICS (Metric Space, Complex Integration and Algebra)
Optional Paper—2
Time : Three Hours] [Maximum Marks : 60
N.B. :— (1) Solve all the FIVE questions.
(2) All questions carry equal marks.
(3) Question Nos. 1 to 4 have an alternative. Solve each question in full or its
alternative in full.
UNIT—I
1. (A) Prove that the unit interval [0, 1] is uncountable. 6
(B) Let A be the set of all sequences whose elements are the digits 0 and 1, then prove that
A is uncountable. 6
OR

 0, if x = y
(C) Let d be defined by d ( x , y ) =  for x, y ∈ IR. Show that d defines a metric on IR.
 1, if x ≠ y

(D) Let X be a metric space and E be a subset of X. Then prove that E is open if and only if
EC is closed. 6
UNIT—II
2. (A) If {Kα} is a collection of compact subsets of a metric space X such that intersection of
every finite subcollection of Kα is nonempty, then prove that IK α is non empty.. 6

(C) Define a complete metric space. If a sequence {xn} of real numbers is convergent in R, then
show that {xn} is a Cauchy sequence in R. 6
(D) Let E be a subset of the real line R. If (x, y ∈ E and x < z < y ⇒ z ∈ E) then prove that
E is connected. 6
UNIT—III
3. (A) Show that a commutative ring D is an integral domain if and only if for a, b, c ∈ D with
a ≠ 0, the relation ab = ac implies b = c. 6
(B) Define an ideal of a ring R. If U and V are ideals of a ring R, then prove that U ∩ V is
also an ideal of R. 6
OR
