SPECIFICATION

PIPING LINE CLASS S2500J

AUGUST 2017 15480.S2500J -2
A. All piping shall be shown on detailed engineering drawings. Some related drawings used on past
designs at TED and CED are available for use in development of the design details. Selection
and approval of the type of special items used must involve the Eastman Representative prior to
proceeding with final design. See paragraph 1.2.K for some reference Eastman (TED) drawings.
B. In the past, core/jacket ends used ASME/ANSI B16.5 Class 2500 weld neck, non-reducing
flanges with the jacket pipe welded to the WN hub. This is no longer a preferred method for
core/jacket terminations but is acceptable when shown in design. High-pressure end connectors
may be of special design to match up to equipment and valves. When special design is chosen,
the flanges shall meet the requirements of ASME/ANSI B16.5, with design values for m = 3 and
y = 20,000 (or higher as for metal gasket).
C. Design details may show Clamp-on jackets instead of fabricated jackets on valves and high
maintenance items. Steam shall be used to heat these portions.
D. Reducing and Non-Reducing Insert Flanges for Jacketed Piping:
1. There are two types of insert flanges listed in this specification for jacketed piping: reducing
and non-reducing. Reducing and Non-Reducing refer to the nominal flange size relating to
the core pipe size. Non-reducing insert flanges are sized to match the core pipe and allow the
use of core-sized valves and equipment. That is, an insert flange for a 2" flange x 2" core x 3"
jacket has a 2" flange and 2" core and would be Non-Reducing. In contrast, reducing insert
flanges have a flange size that matches the nominal size of the jacket pipe. Thus, an insert
flange for a 3" flange x 2" core pipe x 3" jacket pipe has a 3" flange but a reduced 2" core and
would be Reducing. If equipment must mate with the reducing insert flange, it must have
oversize flanges. In other words, the flange drilling of the reducing insert flange matches the
jacket size. The flange drilling of the non-reducing insert flange matches the core size. See
Para. 3.1 for a table of size combinations.
2. The insert flange for jacketed piping allows the jacket fluid to be brought up against the back
of the flange assembly and therefore minimize the heat transfer loss. Due to the insert design,
the thermodynamic benefit of the reducing flange is the better of the two styles and typically
preferred. The non-reducing insert flange, because of its smaller size, also demands more
dexterity of installation personnel than does a reducing insert flange. Usually, reducing
flanges are specified on pipe-to-pipe connections and non-reducing flanges limited to pipe-to-
equipment/valve connections or to single piping with traditional flanges.

NOTES:
02 Dual grade (304/304L) seamless pipe is acceptable. The design allowable stress shall be for
ASTM A312-TP304 "plain" grade stainless steel pipe per ASME B31.3 piping code.
03 Special Flanges for High-Pressure Process Core/Jacket Ends, when chosen, shall be specially
designed and shown on design details. See paragraph 1.4.
06 Threaded Vogt® couplet and plug shall be limited for use on jacket branches after terminal
valves at vents, drains, and pressure connections, and at temperature connections.
07 The A194-2H steel nuts may be used with 410 SS bolts where galling is a concern.
08 Ring Type Joint is the primary choice flange connection for heat transfer fluid on jacket
branches. Mexico-PET and Spain-PET projects used RF & SP-WD in 1994 & 1995.
11 Use to fabricate gussets for jacket vents and drains, and to fabricate jackets for valves shown in
details.
13 Use to fabricate pad flanges, etc., shown in details.
14 Line blinds, spacers, spectacle blinds, and restricting orifices shall be per Standard Detail
15480.2502.
15 Line blinds, spacers, spectacle blinds, and restricting orifices (RJ) shall be per Standard Detail

NOTES:
28 Index 282A and 272C valves are to be used for connection of utility service to jacket only.
82 Stud bolt lengths may be longer due to increased thickness of the insert flange.
84 Use non-reducing flange against equipment or at spec break to piping with non-reducing
flange.
85 The large tongue and groove flange facing on the inset flange is not the standard supplied
facing and must be specified when ordered.
F38 Do not use 410 SS in coastal sites.
G1 Use hardened washer with 1-inch & larger flange nuts, and where needed to apply a more
uniform bolt torque and/or lower friction contact for the nut or bolt head. Washers are
recommended where flange back bearing surfaces are not parallel or appear damaged, or, to
prevent gouging damage to the flange back bearing surface. Use of washers may require extra
length bolts.
J1 Drilling of reducing insert flange matches jacket size. Drilling of non-reducing insert flange
matches core size.
J2 The insert flanges listed in this specification are the preferred method for jacket terminations.
V3 Cast valves specifying an increased casting quality factor of 1.00 per ASME B31.3 or used in
Critical Service, Very Critical Service, or Category M Service per ASME B31.3 shall be in
compliance with EES PNSM0110 A, Section 4.4.5.
V19 Valves which are to be installed in insulated piping systems shall have extended stems,
extended bonnets, or raised operating handles with lockout capabilities which will allow full
insulation plus hand clearance of approximately 3-inches (76 mm).
V41 The straight through bore of valves shall be checked to ensure sufficient clearance prior to
being selected for applications such as hot tapping, component insertion, etc. Valve
manufacturers vary bore configurations and sizes. Consult manufacturer’s specifications for
specific bore configuration, dimensions and clearance.
V42 Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation of valves including cautions on
weld end assembly, orientation, and disassembly.

the assembly of bolted flange connections on piping systems.

3.5 TESTING
A. See Specification 15480.0300, "Piping, General Testing"

identify any leaks prior to introduction of the thermal fluid, then Hydrostatic Leak Test the
jacket with thermal fluid. As an alternative, the jacket section can be hydrostatic tested with
water if properly dried before introducing thermal fluid. At the Owner's option and approval,
a Pneumatic Leak Test may be applied to the jacket section rather than the Hydrostatic Leak
Test.
B. Maximum Hydrostatic Test Pressure - Core section: 4500 psig (31027 kPag, 311 barg)
C. Maximum Hydrostatic Test Pressure - Jacket section: 265 psig (1827 kPag, 19 barg)
D. Maximum Pneumatic Test Pressure - Jacket Section: 195 psig (1344 kPag, 14 barg)

3.6 CLEANING
A. Core section: Core pipe shall be cleaned per Specification 15480.0500, "Piping, General
Cleaning".
B. Jacket section: The heat transfer fluid jacket shall be flushed with water and blown out with 60
psig nominal (414 kPag, 4 barg) instrument air if available. If instrument air is not available, 80
psig nominal (552 kPag, 5.5 barg) plant air will be used.

CAUTION: Do not allow water to enter the jacket section after the drying step is completed. It
is essential the jacket section be as free of moisture as possible before introduction of the thermal
fluid.
