UNIT 13: CAN YOU HELP ME?


PERIOD 1 – WORDS + GRAMMAR 1
I/ Objectives:
- To identify words for making smoothies
- To understand a short story
- To learn object pronouns and how to use them in questions and sentences
- To act out a story
II/ Procedures: ( 90 mins )

- Greeting
- Game: Guess the word:
1/ Warm-up
 T divides Ss into 2 teams

 Slides
Lead-in
2/ Vocabulary - Ss have a look at the pictures
(25’) - Ask ss to tell what they see in the pictures
Presentation:
- T introduces Unit 13, tells ss that they are going to learn about words for making
smoothies
- Elicit new words by holding the flashcards and ask “Who know this word?”
- Calls some ss to try reading and explaining the words
- T corrects as necessary and model the words that ss don’t know.
Practice
Controlled activities
Listen, point and repeat.
- Ask Ss to open their class books and look at the words
- Play the recording for Ss to listen and point to the words.
- Play the recording again for ss to repeat the words
- Ask individual Ss to say the words for the class
Guided activities
- Activity 1: Check memory:
T calls each student to stand up. T shows the flashcards in different order and ask
student to read the words quickly
- Activity 2: What’s missing?
 Divide class into 2 teams. Each team sends a member to the board
 Display the flashcards from the vocabulary set on the board. Point to each one
in turn for children to say the words. Give ss a few seconds to look at them.
 Ask ss to turn around. Remove a card.
 Display the cards again and ask What’s missing?
 When ss have identified the missing card, shuffle the cards again the
procedure

Pre- teach a story


Lead in
3/ Story (25’) - T asks ss:
 “Have you ever made a drink or food at home?”
 “What was that?”
 “Who helped you?”
 “Did you succeed or fail?”
- T calls some individuals to answer.
- Ask ss to look at 4 pictures and tell what they can see (who, what they are doing,
their feelings, objects)
- Ask ss to predict what the story is about.
Teach the story
- T plays the recording and ss follow
- T plays the recording again and pauses after each sentence for ss to listen and
repeat.
- T asks ss to find the words from Ex1 and new words that they don’t know in the
story
- T explains new words
- T has ss work in groups of 3 to practice the story
- Invite groups to read the story in front of the class
Act out the story.
- T and the class decide on the actions for the story
- T plays the recording for ss to listen and practice the actions
- Ss work in groups of 3 to act out the story
- T calls some groups to act in front of the class
Post teach
Check understanding:
- T asks ss some comprehension questions:
 What does Mum ask Leo/Amy/Holly to do?
 What do they use? (blender, milk, sugar, strawberries)
 Who helps Amy chop the strawberries?
 Why are the children laughing?
Break Time (5’)

Lead in:
4/ Grammar - Ask ss to focus on the picture and examples.
(25’) - T writes the example sentence on board and circle the word “I, clean, it”
- Ask ss which word is the subject, verb, or object.
- Call one student to say what “it” refers to. (the mess)
- T explains that “it” is called an object pronoun.
- Do the same with more examples:
The dog chased the cat.
I met Alex last night.
The mother was looking for her children.
Presentation:
- Ask 1 student to read the rule and example in the box for the class
- T explains the rule again: In a sentence, the object can be replaced by an object

pronoun to avoid repetition.


- T shows examples of sentences without pronouns to make ss see how boring it is
- Analyze the example: “some milk” is the object of the sentence and replaced by
pronoun “it”.
- Go through each of the object pronouns in turn.
Practice:
Controlled activities:
- T explains Ex3, Ex4 and the models
- Ask students to do Ex3 and Ex4
- Call individuals to write answers on board
Guided activities:
- T gives ss more exercies to practice: Multiple Choice
- Have ss play game on the prepared slides

5/ Wrap-up - Remind ss about what they’ve learned in the lesson and homework.
