1 A random variable X has the following probability function: 12 BL-3 CO1

Values of X, 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
P(x) a 3a 5a 7a 9 a 11 a 13 a 15 a 17 a

(i)Determine the value of a (ii) Evaluate P(X<3), P(X≥3) and P(0<X<5)

(iii) Find the distribution function F(x).

2 Compute the first four moments about the mean for the following 12 BL-2 CO1
distribution and also evaluate β1 and β2.

4 A hospital switch board receives an average of 4 emergency calls in a 10 12 BL-3 CO3

minutes interval. What is the probability that (i) there are at most 2
emergency calls in a 10 minute interval (ii) there are exactly 3 emergency
calls in a 10 minute interval?

5 (a) Find the mean and standard deviation of Normal distribution in which 12 BL-1 CO3
7% of items are under 35 and 89% of items are under 63.
(b) Derive mean and Variance of exponential distribution.
6 A population consists of six numbers 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24. Consider all 12 BL-3 CO4
samples of size two which can be drawn without replacement from this
population. Find i) the Population Mean ii) the Population Variance iii) the
mean of Sampling distribution of the sample mean iv) the Standard error of
sample mean. Verify the results.

7 Two horses A and B were tested according to the time (in seconds) to run a 12 BL-3 CO5
particular track with the following results.

Horse A 28 30 32 33 33 29 34
Horse B 29 30 30 24 27 29

Test whether the two horses have the same running capacity.

8 On the basis of information given below about the treatment of 200 patients 12 BL-3 CO5
suffering from a disease, state whether the new treatment is comparatively
superior to the conventional treatment.
