1 - What is MARPOL?
The International convention for the prevention of pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is the
main international convention concerning in prevention of pollution of the marine
environment from ship accidents or pollution related to ship operations
Oil fuel: means any oil used as fuel in connection with the propulsion and auxiliary
machinery of the ship in which such oil is carried.
Nearest Land: the baseline from which the territorial sea of the territory in question is
established in accordance with international law
Special Areas: sea areas where, for recognized technical reasons in relation to their
oceanographical and ecological conditions and to the particular character of their sea
traffic, Under the Convention, these special areas are provided with a higher level of
protection than other areas of the sea
Oil residue (sludge): means the residual waste oil products generated during the normal
operation of a ship such as those resulting from the purification of fuel or lubricating oil
for main or auxiliary machinery, separated waste oil from oil filtering equipment, waste
oil collected in drip trays, and waste hydraulic and lubricating oils
