    1 - What is MARPOL?
    The International convention for the prevention of pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is the
    main international convention concerning in prevention of pollution of the marine
    environment from ship accidents or pollution related to ship operations

    2- What are the Annexes and Protocols of MARPOL?


    Annex I regulations for the prevention of pollution by oil: as concern with prevention of
    oil pollution from ships
    Annex II regulations for the control of pollution by noxious liquid substances in bulk:
    Details of discharge standards and measures to combat pollution from harmful liquid
    substances carried in bulk
    Annex III prevention of pollution by harmful substances carried by sea in packaged
    form: making requirements for the issuing of detailed standards on packing, marking,
    labelling, documentation, stowage, quantity limitations, exceptions, and notifications.
    Annex IV prevention of pollution by sewage from ships: Wastewater that has not been
    atomized or disinfected must be discharged more than 12 nautical miles from the
    nearest land. discharge of sewage into the sea is prohibited, except when the ship has
    in operation an approved sewage treatment plan
    Annex V prevention of Pollution by garbage from ships :Dealing with types of garbage
    and the way in which they can be disposed of, Preventing the disposal of plastic in the
    sea
    Annex VI prevention of air pollution from ships: Sets limits on sulfur oxide and nitrogen
    oxide from ship exhausts and prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting
    substances
    3- What is the purpose of Annex I?
    The main purpose of Annex I is to prevent the oil pollution of the sea thus the oil or oil
    products is transported most of time by sea, the Annex sited to ensure that the majority
    of oil tankers are safely built and operated and are constructed to reduce the amount of
    oil spilled in the event of an accident
    requirement for new oil tankers to be fitted with segregated ballast tanks, so as to
    obviate the need to carry ballast water in cargo tanks
    using many innovations on allowable discharges of bilge water through the oily water
    separator or oily waters from the cargo tanks, through the oil discharge and monitoring
    system.

    4- Write meaning of below terms according to MARPOL Annex I:


    Oil: means petroleum in any form including crude oil, fuel oil, sludge, oil refuse and
    refined products (other than those petrochemicals which are subject to the provisions of
    Annex II of the present Convention) and, without limiting the generality of the foregoing,
    includes the substances listed in appendix I to this Annex.
    Oily mixture: means a mixture with any oil content.

    Oil fuel: means any oil used as fuel in connection with the propulsion and auxiliary
    machinery of the ship in which such oil is carried.

    Nearest Land: the baseline from which the territorial sea of the territory in question is
    established in accordance with international law

    Special Areas: sea areas where, for recognized technical reasons in relation to their
    oceanographical and ecological conditions and to the particular character of their sea
    traffic, Under the Convention, these special areas are provided with a higher level of
    protection than other areas of the sea

    Oil residue (sludge): means the residual waste oil products generated during the normal
    operation of a ship such as those resulting from the purification of fuel or lubricating oil
    for main or auxiliary machinery, separated waste oil from oil filtering equipment, waste
    oil collected in drip trays, and waste hydraulic and lubricating oils
