1. Document Management
This is vital for being able to store, track and manage all the data associated with your product development
processes. It includes everything from graphics and text right through to engineering calculations. Comprehensive
document management makes it easier to track any data changes and monitor access to documents by creating a
single, central data store.
2 .Embedded Visualization
Embedded visualization allows for collaboration, between mechanical and electrical areas, using centralized digital
product information. It also makes it possible to view any product data, without needing authentication from the native
tool.
3 .Work flow
This component of a PLM solution makes it possible to define product development processes fully, through a
standardized method. It also ensures that all process and procedures are adhered to and all necessary related tasks
taken.
4 .Distributed Collaboration
Companies increasingly operate across multiple locations, with internal and external partners. Distributed
collaboration means both individuals and larger teams can work concurrently on a project, with all data securely
protected, regardless of location.
Global collabration.
It devlops new product at faster rate by reducing manfucaturing
time.
It improves quality of the products.
It keeps track of change order.
Easy to communicate with every persons in the organization.
Reduce waste and increase productivity
Eliminate prototype cost
PLM is no longer a mechamical system, its being used in high
companies Google,Pharmacy/Medical devices companies such as
Zimmer,Baxter etc.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLM AND PDM?
PLM stands for Product Life cycle Management. It manages products from the beginning of their life,
including development, through growth and maturity, to the end of life. PDM stands for Product Data
Management.
ORIGIN: PDM is a subset of PLM, PDM started from the idea of managing 2D/3D CAD vaulting and
simple product structures using Product Information Management systems (PIMs). PLM has emerged
from extending PIMs into engineering, manufacturing and service, managing the successive
‘integrated’ bills of materials (BOMs). Therefore, PLM includes PDM .
FOCUS : PDM focuses on managing design data as it relates to product development processes, PLM
centers on reengineering product development and manufacturing processes as they relate to product
lifecycles.
PDM is a design-focused technology that increases efficiencies within existing product development
processes by improving the management of product design data. PLM, on the other hand, is a
strategic, process- centered approach that leverages PDM and other technologies—along with
consulting services_ to manage product lifecycles, remake processes, and increase output. As a result,
PLM improves productivity across the connected enterprise rather than in a single department or a
specific process.
SUITABILITY: While product development organizations and manufacturers of all sizes benefit from PDM
technology, a PLM system is more suited to large, global manufacturing concerns rather than small and
midsize manufacturers.
PDM systems are faster and easier to implement. Manufacturers can implement some PDM systems in a
single day or over a long weekend, while others can take several days. Unless customization services are
required, any consulting fees associated with the implementation are typically minimal. Conversely, PLM
solutions can take months and even years to implement, and generally require lengthy, expensive
consulting engagements.
USEFUL: PDM is useful for mainstream Manufacturers Implementing a PDM system is a more
manageable, affordable step for mainstream manufacturers. By using 3D CAD data in conjunction with a
PDM solution, you can improve fundamental product design and engineering processes that support
automated manufacturing, while increasing productivity at each stage of your existing development
process.
Emergence of PLM Technology
In order to truly understand PLM, one must understand the evolution of PLM from earlier 3-
letter acronyms such as PDM (Product Data Management) and CPC (Collaborative Product
Commerce). Whereas PDM is focused on product specific information, CRC extended the
concept to the supplier. Finally, PLM evolved as an enterprise software solution that addresses
sharing of heterogeneous product data across many functions and thus marrying the product
data with surrounding business processes.
