Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2010

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Pass Mark : 45
Course: Basic Electrical Engineering Time : 3 hrs
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a. Discuss dependent and independent sources with diagrams. 8

Analyze the circuit by the mesh method. From the results
calculate the current in the 5resistance.

b. In the network of figure given below, find the current through the 7
10resistor utilizing Thevenin’s theorem.

2. a. What do you mean by active and passive circuit elements? State 7

maximum power transfer theorem and hence determine the
expression for maximum power transfer.
b. State Norton’s theorem. Find the current in the 5resistor for the 8
circuit in the figure utilizing Norton’s theorem.

3. a. Explain the term resonance. Derive the expression of frequency 7
in parallel resonance of RLC circuit and determine the effect of
Q-factor in series resonating circuit.
b. A 400V, balanced Y- connected supply is connected to three
8
equal impendence (80+j60)in a Y formation. Calculate: phase
current, line current, power factor and total power.
4. a. Describe the working principle of single phase energy meter. 7
b. Calculate the rms value measured by a hot-wire voltmeter if it is 8
connected across the terminals of a generator whose voltage
waveform is represented by:
V = 200sinwt +100sin3wt + 50sin5wt.
Also calculate the average value of the voltage.
5. a. What are the main parts of a transformer? Deduce the expression 7
for induced emf of a transformer.

3000V/110V, 50Hz single phase transformer.
O.C. test: 110V 10.2A 350Watt on LV side
S. C test: 150V 10 A 500 Watt on HV side
Calculate and draw the equivalent circuit of the transformer referred to
primary side.
6. a. Explain in very brief about the various types of DC motor. 7
b. A 220 V dc shunt motor draws a current of 40 A at full load and
8
runs with a speed of 1400 RPM. Calculate the value of resistance
required to be inserted in the armature circuit so that the speed
drops to 1200 RPM at constant load. Given that R a = 0.02and
