INTERSCHOOL SPELLING BEE COMPETITION (ISSBC)
CHAPTER 2, 2022-23
1. INTRODUCTION

APS is extremely glad to bring to you the Second Chapter of the INTERSCHOOL
SPELLING BEE COMPETITION for the prestigious SHARNBASVESHWAR
MEMORIAL ROLLING TROPHY (ERT). ISBC is an acclaimed competition hugely
benefiting the students in many ways throughout students’ life and in their
professional life later on. Hence, APS takes pride in continuing its legacy of such
internationally accepted educational activities in the school.

2. WHAT IS SPELLING BEE


Spelling Bee is a competition in which the participants will be asked to spell a word
correctly, and the process is continued until the winners emerge. Historically the
competition dates back to 1808 with the name spelling match and to 1850s with the
name Spelling Bee. Spelling Bee competitions are a widely celebrated competition in
the USA, and now, in almost all parts of the world.

3. THE SPELLING BEE AT APS, SETTING TRENDS


The APS spelling bee at APS was started in the Year 2022 with two levels: intra-
school and inter-school. About 3000 students participating in the prelim following
by about 1000 in different age-group at the school leer. In the Inter-school level the
participants were 80 students. We are happy that the pioneering efforts of the APS
could set a trend which triggered many schools to start their own Spelling Bee
Competitions. The competition is named as the APS Interschool Spelling Bee
Competition (APS-ISSBC) and the APS-ISSBC is now a yearly competition with its
unique characteristics and vision and mission.

4. VISION
Orient pupils to be positively competitive in the field of language-learning and
nurture the ability to acquire, and use language skills and excel in communication.

5. MISSION
To encourage pupils to research, find, improvise and use vocabularies of varying
difficulties and interpretations, connotations, and significance to achieve the lexical
excellence that would enable them to become competent communicators.

6. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES


6.1. Encourage students to learn and use English language correctly and efficiently.
6.2. Create interest in learning spelling and help master the art and methods of
learning spelling accurately and quickly.
6.3. Orient pupils towards excellence in learning.
6.4. Promote interest in exploring the roots of words and their meaning.

6.5. Acquaint students with well defined, structured approaches towards
programmes and activities.
6.6. Create interest in language and the best use of the language in demanding
environments.
6.7. Generate a taste for correct spelling.
6.8. Discover, showcase, and give vent to language abilities.

7. THE FEATURES OF THE COMPETITION


7.1. The APS Spelling Bee competition is a yearly competition.
7.2. A school can have 3 entries or candidates (players).
7.3. The contestants attempt to spell correctly the words assigned to them by a
judge.
7.4. Competition will be individual-based and they (Individual) may play several
rounds before getting eliminated or comes out as winner.
7.5. Each player gets eliminated when s/he misspells a word.
7.6. The last remaining player will be the winner.
7.7. The school winner will be decided based on the total point earned by the
school.
7.8. The total points earned by a school will depend on to number of rounds its
candidates are able to win through. The point/s for each round will be parallel
to the number of rounds with each succeeding round doubling the points. A
player would earn 1 point if s/he is able to win over the first round, in the
second round the earned point will be 2, in the third round 4, in the fourth
round 8, and the like.
7.9. The school’s total earned points will be equal to the total earned points by its
contestants (Maximum 3 contestant from a school) in their respective category
meaning the total points will be calculated adding up all the points earned by
its participants from each round.
7.10. The winning school will carry the Rolling Trophy (RT) and will keep the same
in their custody for 11 months/ until 30 days prior to the date of next year’s
ISSBC.
7.11. The winning school is directed to bring back the trophy ceremonially for the
next year’s ISSBC on the date as may be decided by the host school.
7.12. The date and time and procedures of bringing back the RT will be announced
later on.
7.13. The individual winners, the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd places, will be awarded
with certificates, individual trophies, and cash prizes.

8. ELIGIBILITY AND CONDITIONS FOR REGISTRATION


8.1. The participant should be the student of a school which is approved by the
CBSE, State, or any other Board.
8.2. The participant should register only through his/her school.
8.3. A maximum of 3 students can register from one school.
8.4. The ISBC is held in two separate categories based on the Grade/Class.

A.Category -1

B.Category – 2

8.5. There will be only ONE SCHOOL WINNER decided by the total number of
points earned by both the categories.
8.6. The Registration is free and the entry form should be duly filled and signed by
the school Principal and with the school seal.

9. REGISTRATION AND DOCUMENTS


9.1. The schools should certify that the participants are the bonafide students of
the respective schools.
9.2. The participants’ names should be entered as given in their Birth
Certificate/Aadhaar card.
9.3. The schools should provide the Aadhaar card of the participants along with
their completed registration form.
9.4. They should enter the names on or before the last dates for registration.

10. SELECT WORDS OF THE SPELL BEE


10.1. The select number of words is from the NCERT Textbooks of Grades VI – VIII
and IX-XII according to the categories, and all the words except the Super
Challenge Word List (SCWL) are provided well before the competition.
10.2. It is decided that the maximum member of select words for both the categories
shall not exceed 1000.
10.3. The Second Chapter of the ISBC shall have 800 select words for Category B
(IX-XII) and 800 select words for Category A (VI-VIII)
10.4. The selected words will have varying degree of difficulty levels.
10.5. The Super Challenge Word List will be used only when the select words are
exhausted during the competition.
10.6. The SCWL is special word list and will not be provided in advance. However,
the SCWL will be taken form the NCERT textbooks according to their
categories.

11. SOURCES OF WORDS


Category A
Category-A select words and SCWL are from the NCRT textbooks VI-VIII.
Category B
Category-B select words and SCWL are from the NCRT textbooks IX-XII.

12. AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS


The winners of the APS ISBC are rightfully recognised and promoted at
various levels. At the end of the laborious travelling through the honeycomb of
intricate spellings of many bee-words, those who come victorious will be
awarded with certificates, trophies and cash prizes.

13. CONCLUSION
The APS ISBC is a highly meritorious educational activity and participating in
the same would be considered a distinguishing trace of one’s schooling and
therefore, we would like to bring this opportunity for raising the level of
students’ ambition and to create a beeline for excellence.
