Session1: Styles

Q1. What is a Style?


Ans. Style is a set of formats that we can apply to selected pages, text, frames, and their
elements in the document to quickly change their appearance. When we apply a style,
we apply a whole group of formats at the same time.
Styles are logical attributes. Using Style means, that we stop saying "font size 14
points,Times New Roman, Bold, Centred", and we start saying "Style Name" because we
have defined the “Style Name” .
Uses:
 Style helps improve consistency in a document.
 Style makes formatting easier

Q2. What are the advantages of using Styles?


Ans. Advantages of using styles are
● Styles help in improving consistency in a document.
● Styles make major formatting easier
● Styles make formatting changes very fast

Q3. What are the different types of Style?

What are Style Categories?
Ans. Openoffice.org supports the following types of styles in a document:
● Page Styles: It includes margins, headers and footers, borders and backgrounds.
● Paragraph Styles: This Controls the total appearance of the paragraph such as text
alignment, tabs, line spacing, borders and even character formatting.
● Character Styles: Character Styles affect selected text within a paragraph such as
the font and size of the text or bold and Italic formats.
● Frame Style: Frame Styles are used to format the frames around graphics and text
including wrapping text, borders, background and columns.
● Numbering Style/List Style: Numbering Styles apply similar alignment for
numbering or bullet characters, and font to number or bulleted list.

Q4. What is Style and Formatting Window?


Ans. All Style related information and management are available in a special floating or
dockable window in Writer known as Style and Formatting window. This window
shows the type of styles available in Writer.

Q5. What are the ways to open Styles and Formatting window?

How do you open Style and Formatting window in Writer?
Ans. We can open this window using one of the following three ways:
● By Command: Format > Styles and Formatting.
● By Clicking: Style and Formatting button on Formatting toolbar.
● By Pressing: F11

Q6. How would you apply a Style available in Style and Formatting window, onto a
document object?
Ans.
● Open Styles and Formatting window(F11).
● Select object (Paragraph/Character/ Frame etc.) on which a style is to be applied.
● From Styles and Formatting window, select the Style-type and then double click on
the Style name which is to be applied on it.

Q7. From where we can came to know which Style is applied on object?
Ans. Stylebox on formatting toolbar shows the name of the Style of current object.

Q8. What is the utility of Fill Format mode?


Ans. Fill Format mode is used to apply a style to many different areas quickly without
going back to the Styles and Formatting window and double click every time. It is quite
useful when we need to format many scattered paragraph or objects with the same
style.

Q9. How to undo the last Fill Format action?


Ans. When this mode is active, right-clicking anywhere in the document undoes the last
Fill Format action.

Q10. How many ways are there for creating new style?
Ans. There are two ways for creating a new style:
● From Selection.
● Using Drag and Drop.

Q11. Write the steps to create and update a new style from a selection
Ans.
Steps:
● Open Styles and Formatting window.
● Click on type of Style to create.
● Select the object with desired formatting.
● From the New style dropdown(right top corner), click New Style from Selection.
● Specify name of new style and click OK.
Note:
This new Style applies only to this document. It will not be saved in the template, that
means we cannot use it in another document.

Q12. Write steps to create a new style using Drag and Drop.
Ans. Steps:
● Open the Style and Formatting window.
● Select formatted object from which we want to create a style.
● Drag the selection to the Style and Formatting window.
● Type a name in Create Style dialog box and Click OK.

Q13. In how many ways you can modify Styles in OpenOffice.org?


Ans. OpenOffice.org provide several ways to modify styles (both the predefined styles
and custom styles that we create):
● Updating a style from a selection.
● Load or copy styles from another document or template.

Q14. How to Update/Modify a style from selection?


Ans. To update a style from a selection:
● Open the styles and formatting window
● In the document select an item that has the format you want to adopt as a style.
● In the Style and Formatting window, select the style you want to update then long-
click on the arrow next to the New Style from Selection icon(top right corner) and click
on Update Style.

Q15. Write steps to load styles from existing file.


Ans. We can copy styles by loading them from a template or another document:
● Open the document we want to copy styles into
● In the Style and Formatting window, long-click on the arrow next to the New Style
from Selection icon and then click on Load Styles.
● On the Load Styles dialog, find and select the template we want to copy styles from.
● Select the categories of styles to be copied. Select Overwrite if we want the style
being copied to replace any styles of the same names in the document we are
copying them into.
● Click OK to copy the styles.
NOTE:
To copy the styles from another document, click the From File button to open a
window from which you can select the required document.
