Safety rules
1. Failure to observe the basic rules of accident prevention and safety is one of
the main causes of accidents when using and servicing industrial machinery.
2. Before performing any operation on the machine you must carefully read this
manual, the safety rules below and the information given on the warning
notices affixed to the machine. Do not allow unauthorised personnel to use,
adjust or repair the machine.
3. In the design and manufacture of the machine and the writing of the instruction
manual, all attempts have been made to eliminate or reduce the hazards for
those who install, use or repair the machine. If you come across any further
potentially hazardous conditions, please inform the manufacturer, who will take
measures to remedy the problem.
4. When required, all persons working on the machine must wear protective
clothing (helmets, safety footwear, gloves, earplugs or hearing protection,
safety goggles etc.) in accordance with international workplace safety
standards.
5. Only persons with adequate technical training, who have a complete working
knowledge of the machine, who have the necessary physical and psychological
requirements for working safely on the machine and who have fully read the
documentation supplied are allowed to operate the machine and perform
routine maintenance tasks on it.
6. Set up footboards or platforms (in accordance with the safety regulations in
force) when installing parts that cannot be reached from ground level.
7. When interfacing with other machinery, strictly observe the instructions given by
the manufacturers of the other machines.
8. Check that the safety systems (guards, microswitches, sensors) are in perfect

working order before starting work. Any parts that are not in perfect working
order must be repaired before proceeding. It is strictly forbidden to remove
safety devices, or to tamper with the electrical system or any of the
mechanisms.
9. This machine must be used for the purpose for which it was designed. Improper
use of the machine is strictly prohibited.
10. Do not touch the machine with your hands or any other parts of the body if
they are wet or damp.
The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any injury to persons or
damage to property resulting from the non-observance of the above safety
prescriptions.
These prescriptions supplement but do not replace the statutory industrial
accident prevention regulations in force in the country where the machine is
installed.

1. Description
The PIOVAN loader is designed for vacuum transportation of plastic granules from
a pickup point to a utilization point. It can be installed directly on the processing
machine.
All models have a filter for the transport air and are equipped with an automatic self-
cleaning system.
If the filter is used for cleaning air that carries several different plastic materials,
make sure that the dust released by these materials does not form corrosive,
explosive or inflammable mixtures or deposits.

The following material must not be used with the feeders:


• plastic materials in fibre, flock, food products and corrosive, inflammable,
explosive or hazardous materials;
• metallic or mineral materials (stones, gravel, etc.);
• anything that is not strictly plastic material.

DANGER

All uses of the machine are excluded in environments with
a potentially explosive atmosphere, caused by powders or
gas.

3. Handling
Safety rules for handling, lifting, packing, and unpacking
1. The machine must be handled by expert personnel in accordance with statutory
health and safety regulations.
2. Use handling equipment that conforms to the safety requirements stated in the
“Machinery Directive”. The handling equipment must be accompanied by
documentation certifying its conformity to the above requirements and must be
capable of bearing the weight of the machine plus its packing. Carefully follow
any instructions marked on the machine packing (the weight is given on the
outside of the pack). Do not use ropes or chains to harness the pack.
3. All handling operations must be performed with the machine completely empty,
i.e. with no process materials or fluids inside it, and with any external support
structures removed.
4. All the machine parts involved in the lifting operation are sized for handling
solely the machine with no accessories installed.
5. If the machine is lifted with ropes, make sure that its weight is evenly distributed
over all the lifting points and that the strain on the ropes is uniform. The angle
between each rope and the horizontal plane must not be less than 45°.
6. Fasten any loose parts. Make sure that the load is properly balanced and
securely fastened to the handling equipment. Always proceed with the utmost
caution to avoid injuring persons or damaging the machine.
7. All persons not involved in operating the means of transport must be kept at a
safe distance from the moving load.
8. Position the machine on a perfectly flat and level surface of suitable size and
construction in relation to the weight and dimensions of the machine.
9. After removing the packing, check that all parts of the machine are present and
in good condition. If you have any doubts, do not use the machine: contact the

PIOVAN Technical Service Department or an authorised service centre. The
packing materials must be disposed of in accordance with statutory waste
disposal regulations.

CAUTION
The packing material can cause cuts or abrasions.
Pay special attention and always wear suitable personal
protective equipment!

The machine may be sent to its destination using cardboard packages on pallets,
crates, cages, wooden platforms and protective plastic wrappings. Keep the
packaging material and use it to protect the machine if you have to change its place
of work; always dispose of these items in compliance with the regulations in force
in the place of installation.

The machine, packed or unpacked, can easily be moved by hand (see Fig. 2 -
Page 8).
For moving longer distances, use the means of transport that best preserves the
integrity of the pack and the machine (see Fig. 3 - Page 8).

4. Operation
The material is sucked in through the suction probe 01 (see Fig. 6 - Page 11), due
to the vacuum air flow generated by the internal blower. The probe can be adjusted
to optimise the suction flow by following the indications given in Par. 5.5. - Page 13.

ATTENTION
Do not suck up material that is in a pasty state, as this could cause
build-ups of material that may block up the feeder.
In any case the temperature of transported material must not
exceed 120°C (248°F).

5. Installation
Safety rules for installation
1. The machine must be installed by skilled personnel in compliance with statutory
health and safety regulations and in accordance with the instructions in this
manual.
2. Make sure the installation work is performed in conditions of adequate visibility
that remain constant through time; install supplementary lighting if necessary.
3. Mark off the work zones with tape and display suitable danger notices in the
areas where the installation work is taking place.
4. Install the machine in a place that is protected from aggressive chemicals and
the weather.
5. Check that the supply voltage and frequency stated on the machine data plate
correspond to those of the electrical mains and check that the mains circuit is
suitably sized in relation to the machine's maximum power input (refer to the
"technical data" table and the wiring diagram).

6. The machine must be connected to an efficient earthing point (as specified in
statutory electrical safety regulations). You must make sure that this essential
safety requirement is complied with. If you have any doubts, have the circuit
thoroughly checked by a qualified electrician. Electrical protection devices,
suitably sized for the total power of the machine, must be installed at the point
of connection to the electrical power feeding line (see wiring diagram).

devices and guards fitted by the manufacturer.

5.1. Positioning
The feeder is fixed directly onto a hopper; if necessary the appropriate holes must
be made (see Fig. 1 - Page 6). The feeder body can be rotated continually through
360°, due to the special flange that allows it to be fixed in any direction.
For fixing the feeder, use the holes in the fixing flange, inserting screws that will
provide a grip by the male thread of at least 10 mm.

ATTENTION
The unloading flap is secured using an adhesive tape band to avoid
it being damaged in transit (see Fig. 4 - Page 10).
The adhesive tape must be removed to ensure that the flap moves
freely before installing the feeder.
Check that the hopper cover on which the feeder has been installed
is securely fixed in position and is able to support the weight of the
feeder when it is full of material.
In case of direct application on processing machines (I.M.M. and
extruders), the stability of the feeder subject to any stress must also
be checked.

5.2. Pipe connections
One end of the hose 02 (see Fig. 6 - Page 11) must be fixed to the stub pipe that
sticks out of the feeder, whereas the other end must be fixed to the suction probe
01. Use the hose clamps supplied for fixing the hose.
To ensure the electrical continuity of the piping and avoid static discharges,
proceed as follows:
unwind at least 5 cm of the copper winding (b) from both ends of the hose (a, see
Fig. 7 - Page 11), and insert it inside the pipe (c and d), before coupling it to the
stub pipe and the suction probe (e).

5.3. Electrical connections

ATTENTION
Suitable protection for the total power of the machine must be
installed at the point of connection to the electric mains.
The use of protection fuses is recommended: follow the instructions
given in the attached wiring diagram.
In addition, install a main circuit breaker switch between the
electricity line and the machine power supply lead; it must be
installed in an easily accessible position.

ATTENTION
To disconnect the feeder from the electric power socket, always
grip the plug and never pull on the wire.

The machine is equipped with a power supply cable (length: 3,5 m) equipped with
a Schüko plug suitable for outlets of the same standard, built and protected
according to the safety standards in force in the country where the machine is
installed.

5.4. Compressed air connection


Connect the compressed air supply line to the coupling (see Fig. 8 - Page 12)
present on the machine.
The compressed air must be dry and non-lubricated, at a pressure of
600 ÷ 800 kPa (6 ÷ 8 bar) and a minimum filtration grade of 25µ.

5.5. Regulating the suction probe
The functioning principle of the transport system requires the material to be mixed
with an air flow: it is therefore very important that the air/material proportions be set
carefully so that a homogeneous and constant flow is obtained along the entire
length of the pipe.
The holes (f, g - see Fig. 9 - Page 13) on the end of the probe 01 are opened or
shut and the connecting pipe 02 is passed over them, depending on the type of
material being used and the transport distance.
By increasing the number of holes open (position g) the quantity of air in the mix is
increased so as to speed up and improve the flow. By covering the holes with the
flexible pipe (position f), the concentration of material is increased, and the flow
slows down. Be careful not to increase the quantity of material excessively, to avoid
clogging the piping.
In extreme cases it may be necessary to extract or remove the internal pipe
altogether to obtain the transport characteristics required.

6. Switching on
The machine is supplied to the client ready for correct operation.
To start it, follow the procedure below.
1. Immerse the first section of the suction probe into the container holding the
material, the sack, etc.
2. Supply power to the machine by connecting the power cable.

3. Switch on the feeder by pressing the key on the control panel.

4. The feeder begins its operating cycle, following the sequence described in
Chap. 8. - Page 15.

7. Switching off
1. Switch off the feeder by pressing the key on the control panel.

2. Turn off the power to the machine, disconnecting the power cable.

8. Steps of the programme
The operation of the feeder is based on a sequence made up of a preset number
of "steps".
The current programme step is indicated on the display of the control panel,
preceded by the letter [S ].
Using the control panel it is possible to modify the values of some steps of the
programme by means of the respective programming parameters.
The following table gives the description of each step of the programme and the
correspondence between the steps that can be modified and the respective
programming parameters.

8.1. Work mode

8.2. Intervention of alarms


If an alarm intervenes, the respective initials are shown on the control panel and
the warning lights are lit with a determined sequence (see Chap. 11. - Page 28).

In the event of an alarm, to silence the siren it is necessary to press the key

for less than two seconds.

8.3. Changing parameters
To access the “Basic programming” screen it is necessary to press the key

: for less than 2 seconds: the first parameter appears on the display,

alternating with the value set previously, see Par. 8.4. - Page 18:
• To move from the “Basic programming” screen to the “Programming the

serial port” screen hold down the key for more than 4 seconds, see

Par. 8.5. - Page 19.


• To move from the “Programming the serial port” to the “Advanced

programming” screen hold down the key for more than 4 seconds, see

Par. 8.6. - Page 20.


• On any screen, to confirm the value inserted and go on to the next parameter on

the same screen, press the key for less than 4 seconds.

• To increase the value set by one unit (on any screen), press the key .

When the keys or are kept pressed for more than 2 seconds, the

value displayed begins to increase (or decrease) rapidly.


If no key is pressed for about 20 seconds, the display will return to an indication of

9.1. Remote panel


With this device all the control and setting functions normally possible from the
main control panel can be performed from a remote position.
The main panel and the remote panel work in parallel.

With this device the feeder can be switched on and off from a remote position.

10. Maintenance
Adjusting, servicing and troubleshooting safety rules
1. All adjustment, maintenance and troubleshooting work must be performed by
specialised personnel. Specialised personnel are those who, because of their
education, experience, training, specific knowledge of accident prevention
regulations and first aid, have been authorised to carry out work related to
checking and preventive measures. These personnel must be equipped with all
the tools and equipment specified in both local and international accident
prevention regulations.
2. Thorough inspections, performed at regular intervals, are required to prevent
breakdowns and guarantee that the machine works at maximum efficiency over
time.
3. Unless expressly stated otherwise, all maintenance and adjustment work on
the machine, or parts of it, must be performed with the machine completely
isolated from the electricity, compressed air and water supply sources.
4. Mark off the work zone with tape and put up notices warning of the hazards in
the areas where the adjustment, maintenance or troubleshooting work is taking
place.
5. Wait until the machine and the parts that have to be approached have cooled
down to room temperature before performing any maintenance tasks. Drain off
and remove any liquids inside the machine to prevent them from coming into
contact with live parts during the maintenance work.
6. To avoid injuring persons or damaging objects, make sure that no solids,
liquids or gases are discharged or disposed of in the environment. Have these
substances removed in suitable containers, in accordance with the binding
waste disposal regulations in the place of installation.
7. If any breakdowns occur that the operator is unable to remedy, switch off the

machine and contact the PIOVAN Technical Service Department or an
authorised service centre.
8. On completing the maintenance work, switch on the machine and do the

10.1. Blower maintenance
The brushes must be replaced when the alarm [A05] or [A06] (see Chap. 11. -
Page 28) appears. Do not wait for the alarm to appear [A07], in order to prevent
unpredictable shutdowns of the feeder and to protect the blowing pump.
To replace the brushes, perform the following operations.
1. Disconnect the feeder from the power supply line and position it on a worktop
where replacement can be performed in complete safety.
2. Unscrew the screws that hold the guard 03 (see Fig. 14 - Page 25).
3. Remove the guard and the flange 04.
4. Remove the snap-on cap 05 using a small screwdriver, so as to pry it off
applying leverage on the guards on the brushes on the sides of the cap.
5. Unscrew the 2 screws that lock the body 06 that contains the worn out brush and
remove the electric connector.
6. Insert the body with the new brush and lock it using the 2 screws;
7. Reinsert the electric connector on the brush.
8. Replace the other brush, then replace the cap 05.
9. When reassembling the flange 04 that holds the blower, take care to:
• keep the blower perfectly horizontal with respect to the cover 07;
• tighten the three screws without going below the minimum distance Y of
62 mm: making them too tight could block the blower.
10.Reposition the guard 03 and screw the screws that lock it.
11.Reset the number of loads made in [pG--] (see Par. 8.6. - Page 20).

10.2. Filter maintenance

CAUTION
Risk of damaging the machine.
Replace the filters immediately if worn or damaged!

ATTENTION
Change the used filter cartridge with a clean one (to be set up next
to the machine). Set aside the used cartridge for cleaning
afterwards.
When cleaning parts, always use an industrial vacuum cleaner and
perform the work in a suitable place.
Never use compressed air. After cleaning, store the filter cartridges
in a clean, dry place.

ATTENTION
Automatic filter cleaning does not substitute the manual cleaning of
the filter.
The filter must be cleaned manually at periodic intervals, following
the instructions given here, even in models with self-cleaning filters.

The filter must be cleaned once a week if new, clean material is used. Clean it more
frequently if particularly dusty materials are used.

To clean the filter, perform the following operations (see Fig. 15 - Page 27).
1. Disconnect the feeder from the power supply.
2. Loosen the closing levers 08 and lift the lid 09.
3. Remove the filter from its seat and proceed to clean it.
4. After cleaning reposition the filter in its seat and close the lid with the closing
levers.
If the filter is a fabric filter with detachable bag, it is possible to replace the bag
alone: the upper part of the bag consists of an elastic spring that has to be pressed
firmly towards the centre of the filter to permit extraction (see Fig. 15 - Page 27).
In the models that include automatic filter cleaning, this takes place before (this
parameter can be set in [p!--]) and after (this parameter can be set in [p@--])
each loading cycle, with a jet of compressed air directed onto the filter by means of
a nozzle.
