EF Pre-interview Questions
Please answer these questions concisely and effectively. Good answers are not necessarily the longest, so
don’t worry about having to make your answers lengthy.

1. What is the greatest challenge you have overcome, personally or professionally?

In my last study when I did my thesis, I recognized the timeline was really short but the work and study
were not much being done, resulting in dozens of hours of overtime work for me. To solve this problem, I
set strategy to keep up with the timeline. I noticed that by multitasking I could finish it on time, so I used two
devices for simulation software, wrote my thesis manuscript, and tried to learn renewable energy for my
oral thesis defense. I created a report to check which progress was being done. Finally, within 3 months
since my last proposal thesis defense I was able to finish my final thesis defense with very satisfactory
result and graduated earlier, for only three semesters.

2. You receive some direct and rather negative feedback from a parent about your teaching. How do you
handle the situation?

To handle this situation, I would like to schedule a meeting with the parent to discuss about the problem. I
really want to make sure if there is something about my teaching that really the problem or something else
going on. I understand that every parent wants the best for their children. I will make sure the parent know
that I am aware, only the parent knows their children best. Before the meeting, I would like to inform my
colleague for some support just in case the meeting doesn’t go as expected and the parent give negative
feedback, they will help me with my situation.
In our meeting, I would say I am happy that they are willing to share their concern with me and write down
the points, so they knew they are being heard. I would answer calmly, politely, and give them a better
solution. I will ask them to discuss the details of problem with my teaching, the impact on their children
education and how they want me to teach. If I can’t give them the answer straight away, I will ask them to
come for the next meeting, so I could discuss this with my leader and colleague.

3. How would you go about teaching a beginner student new vocabulary? What about a more advanced
student?

For a new beginner student I will give them the opportunity like the rest of the class, but from my
experience in teaching they will need more time to adjust new vocabulary. So, I would like to encourage
them to speak, giving time to think and appreciate them by giving compliments. By doing that I hope they
feel safer to express their ability, not afraid to make mistakes because it is part of learning.
For advanced student, I would challenge them with some exciting topics that will make them pay attention
and they must think first before they could answer. I would like to give them some questions to test their
understanding to the lesson, especially describe or explain about something.

4. How can you tell if students are engaged in your lesson? What specific signs do you look for?

I can tell if students are engaged when they have high attention and high commitment participating in every
learning process. The students are interest about the topics and show deep processing of learning, take
notes, make eye contact between books and the teacher, confuse in what they think they know about the
lesson and ask some questions about it. If I ask about the topics they will answer it gladly, participating in
every discussion in the classroom, giving their opinion about something, able to keep up with the rest of the
lesson.
The specific signs I look for is when the students could answer my questions about the lesson. It means
that they are engaged pay their attention to the lesson.
5. Describe a successful experience in making a speech or presentation at work or in college. What was the
topic? What made it successful?

In my college days, I joined summer course in Universiti Sains Malaysia to study about renewable energy.
In our last day, we are assigned to present our discussion result about oil and gas in both countries,
Malaysia and Indonesia, about how was the impact to the environment. It was a great presentation, we
discussed the main problem of energy crisis, how long does it take until fossil fuels runs out, how could we
handled the waste of power plants, and what could we use as an alternate energy. We presented it as a
team but I was kind of coordinator of this discussion because of the language barrier that my team had.
The professor asked many questions about our topic and we answered them by giving data, charts, also
graphics that we presented earlier. The teamwork and preparation made it successful. The presentation
went well and they gave us our certificate, proved that we have done our summer course.
Also, one of the requirements to graduate from master degree is publishing my paper to international
conference. Few weeks before proposal defense, I presented my paper about Savonius hydrokinetic
turbine by online conference in The Asian Biohydrogen and Bioprocesses Symposiums (ABBS). The
presentation went well and other member gave a few questions and we discussed about the problem in
Savonius turbines. The preparation and the simulation work that I did for the past few months made it
successful. I could answer the questions easily because not only I already did the simulation work but also
wrote my thesis manuscript.
