PRELIMINARY EVALUATION REPORT

1. PROJECT SUMMARY:
Project scope and method: The project scope for BeResilient involves needs
assessments, web development, and user-centered design principles to create an all-
in-one platform for disaster preparedness. BeResilient falls under the category of
"Technology For Humanity: Disaster Management" as it offers accessible resources to
empower communities to navigate emergencies effectively. Furthermore, the project
has the potential to spawn complementary studies and projects, including research on
its impact, collaborative initiatives with NGOs, and expansion to address the needs of
vulnerable populations.
Problem description and available solutions: According to a report from the United
Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the World Meteorological Organization,
half of the countries globally are not prepared for disasters (UNDRR & WMO, 2022).
This is extremely concerning. A lack of preparedness for disasters could be fatal and
it is immensely important that as many people as possible are educated on disaster
preparedness. Although resources related to disaster education are accessible on
platforms like ready.gov and disasterready.org, many are difficult to understand, and
lack user-friendly interfaces. Additionally, no all-in-one tool exists through which users
may learn about preparedness for disasters, take quizzes to test their knowledge,
access a toolkit to prepare for disasters, track disasters worldwide, and more, all at the
same time.
Solution idea: To help address this problem, we will be developing a web application
that will aid users in learning about disasters and how to prepare for them. It consists
of 5 main features: animations that educate users on different types of disasters and
how they occur; interactive quizzes regarding actions one should take in case of an
emergency; a disaster preparedness toolkit, which includes a planner for creating an
emergency plan, a checklist of essential items to keep on hand, tips on preparedness,
and much more; disaster trackers that enable users to detect disasters in their vicinity;
and emergency service locators that allow users to locate fire stations, police stations,
etc.

3. INDIGENOUSNESS AND ORIGINALITY SIDE:
Our application is unique in that it is an all-in-one disaster preparedness tool that will
help educate and prepare people for disasters. It distinguishes itself by offering a
comprehensive, user-friendly disaster preparedness solution that combines
educational content, interactive features, and advanced technologies. Unlike existing
platforms, it integrates animations, quizzes, a toolkit, trackers, and service locators into
a single application, ensuring users have all necessary resources at their fingertips. Its
focus on engagement, accessibility, and localization makes it an effective tool for
individuals of all backgrounds, addressing the global need for accessible disaster
preparedness resources while catering to specific regional needs.
Method to be followed: The BeResilient app will be developed utilizing HTML, CSS,
and JavaScript for front-end development. Animations will be created using the CSS
and JavaScript library GreenSock Animation Platform (GSAP). Interactive quizzes will
be built using JavaScript and frameworks like React.js for dynamic user interfaces. The
disaster preparedness toolkit will be developed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with
server-side scripting in Node.js for database interactions. For disaster tracking, we'll
integrate mapping functionalities using Google Maps API and JavaScript. Emergency
service locators will utilize geolocation APIs along with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Additionally, the backend will be supported by MongoDB for efficient data storage and
retrieval.
Target audience: The target audience for BeResilient comprises individuals of all
ages and backgrounds who seek to improve their disaster preparedness knowledge
and skills. This includes homeowners, families, schools, community organizations, and
businesses.

historical data. Real-time data analytics and predictive modeling enable proactive
identification of potential risks and early warning alerts. Additionally, BeResilient
utilizes blockchain technology for secure storage and verification of critical information,
such as emergency contacts and medical records. These advanced technologies
collectively equip individuals and communities with the tools and insights needed to
effectively mitigate risks and navigate emergencies, ultimately saving lives and
safeguarding livelihoods.
Commercialization potential: BeResilient utilizes subscription models, partnerships
with NGOs, governments, and corporations, and monetization through data insights
and in-app purchases. With licensing and white-label solutions, it can rapidly scale and
adapt to diverse markets, fostering resilience and catalyzing new projects and
collaborations.
