Evaluation Activity No. 14

TOPIC: COMPARISON OF THE AVERAGE OF THREE OR MORE GROUPS (ANOVA)

1. In order to compare the prices of the product “ Escaso A1 ” an experiment was carried out in three
areas of Lima: Cono Sur, Cono Norte and Lima Centro. In each of these areas, samples were taken
from the largest stores: six stores in Lima Centro, four stores in Cono Norte and five stores in Cono
Sur and the price of said product was consulted. The results are shown in the following table. :

Prices of the scarce product “A1”

ZONES
Northern Southern
Lima Center
Cone Cone
32 27 30
31 27 30
33 30 31
30 28 27
30 27 29
30 28 28

a) At the 5% level of significance, is there sufficient evidence to indicate a difference in the average
price of the scarce product A1 in stores in the three areas of Lima?
b) If necessary, perform Tukey's multiple comparisons.

Tukey Pairwise Comparisons

Group information using Tukey's method and 95% confidence

Zone N Middle Grouping

Center file 6 31,000 A
Southern cone 6 29.167 AB
North cone 6 27.833 B

2. The production manager of a factory wants to determine if the four machines he has use the same
average time to manufacture an item. To do this, select random samples from each machine of
sizes n1 = 6, n2 = 4, n3 = 4 and n4 = 6 respectively, measuring the time they use to manufacture
an item. Due to the carelessness of his assistant, the information obtained was partially lost,
leaving only the following incomplete table:

With this information, raise the appropriate hypotheses and say what the production manager's

conclusion will be, appropriately interpreting his or her results. Use  = 0.05.

3. There are four radio stations. Each station plays rock music for a certain number of minutes per
hour and we want to determine if the average that each station plays this music, per hour, is the
same. For this, 10 hour samples were taken from each station and the following average times in
which rock music was played were found (in minutes).

x̄ 1= 51.43 x̄ 2 = 44.64 x̄ 3 = 47.2 x̄ 4 = 50.85

Furthermore, it is known that: SCT = 650.75 (sum of squares of the total). Apply the appropriate
statistical technique and do an analysis on it.

4) The marketing director of a real estate company located in San Francisco has to determine if there
is any difference in the purchase price of a plot in three different places in the Bay Area, for this she
takes samples of sizes 6, 5 and 6 respectively (data is in thousands of dollars).

The director's assistant informs her that the price of the plots in the different areas has a normal
distribution. Considering this information: Can you affirm that the variability of land prices are
equal? Is there a difference in the purchase price of a parcel in three different locations in the Bay
Area? Use  = 0.05.
5) A company wants to compare four types of tires. The tires were randomly assigned to six similar
cars. The life of the tires in thousands of kilometers is given in the attached table:

Can it be concluded that there are differences in the variability of duration in the four types of tires?
Is there any difference in the average life of the four types of tires? Use  = 0.025.

KRUSKAL WALLIS
1. A cookie manufacturer wants to launch a new packaging for its flagship product on the market
and has to decide between three packaging proposals (E1, E2, E3). For this, he selects 12 people,
chooses four at random and shows them the first wrapper, then chooses another 4 and shows
them the second wrapper and shows the remaining 4 the third wrapper and asks them to assign a
value between 1 and 5 to decide. which one impacted them the most. The qualifier 5 is that it had
the most impact. The results are shown below:

E1 E2 E3
4 3 3
5 4 2
4 4 1
5 5 3

a) Can it be said that the wraps have had a different impact on people? State the hypotheses literally
and draw your conclusions with  =0.05, assume that the data do not follow a normal
distribution.
b) If necessary, perform multiple comparisons with α=0.05. Interpret the results.

2. A poultry farmer from Lima wants to experiment with three food mixtures for turkey chicks. As
there is no experience with the three mixtures, no assumptions can be made regarding the shape
of the distribution of bird weights. The test must determine if there are significant differences
between the weights obtained by chicks fed with each of the foods for an adequate period of time.
Independent samples were taken in which 5 chickens were given food A; 6 for food B and 5 for
food C. Using a 5% significance level, comment on your conclusions. The following table shows the
respective weights (in pounds):

Food A Food B Food C

11.2 12.6 11.3
12.1 10.8 11.9
10.9 11.3 12.4
11.3 11.0 10.6
12.0 12.0 12.0
10.7

3. A personal development specialist randomly selected 18 employees from a company in the

production area and grouped them into three different motivation courses (1: Personal
improvement, 2: Leadership and 3: Integration). At the end of the course, a motivational test was
applied and the scores obtained from each collaborator were recorded. The results were analyzed
in Minitab and are given below:

Kruskal-Wallis Test for Scoring

Range
Course n i Median average
1: Personal Improvement 6 80.50 10.7
2: Leadership 6 87.50 13.6
3: Integration 6 71.00 4.3
Teacher: Dr. Ing. Dennis Alberto Espejo Peña Course: Applied Statistics

a) Identify: Factor, Factor Level and Response Variable.

b) Calculate the ranges for each method. Use Minitab data .
c) It is known that the score obtained from the motivational test does not follow a normal
distribution. With a 1% significance level, can it be stated that the collaborators in the three
motivational courses obtained equivalent results?
d) Which motivational courses obtained different median scores? Use α = 0.01.

4. The mobility of executives from different industries will be investigated: Stock Market, Services,
Heavy Construction Fields and Air Transportation. Samples were selected from each of these
industries, and the number of times an executive was transferred during a 10-year period was
expressed as an index. An index of 0 would indicate no movement, while 100 would indicate
almost constant transfer from one location to another or from one company to another. The
indices of the four groups are:

Stock Heavy Air

Services
market construction Transport
4 3 62 30
17 12 40 38
8 40 81 46
20 17 96 40
16 31 76 21

Since the indices cannot be assumed to be normally distributed, a nonparametric test must be used.
Using the 4% significance level. Is it possible to affirm that mobility rates depend on the types of
industries? Perform comparison tests if necessary.

5. The marketing director of a real estate company located in Lima has to determine if there is any
difference in the purchase price of land in three different districts. For this, 17 plots of land are
randomly selected (6 from La Molina, 5 from Breña and 6 from Surco). The assistant director
informs her that the price of land (in thousands of dollars) in the different districts considered
does not have a normal distribution, so she will use a non-parametric test. The following are
partial calculations: R 1 = 32.5; R2 = 33.5; R3 = 87.

17
∑ R 2( Xij )=1784 . 5
Besides, i=1

Considering this information. What conclusion will the marketing director of this real estate
company reach? If necessary, perform multiple comparisons. Use an α=0.01.
