ANIMAL FARM
Mr. Jones - Mr. Jones was the owner of Manor Farm. He was a careless, cruel drunken man.
When his carelessness and cruelty are the final straw for the animals, they instigate a rebellion
when he neglects to feed them and then tries to beat them when they break into the stores of
grain. Though Mr. Jones attempts to take back Animal Farm, his attempt is unsuccessful and
none of the other farmers have much genuine sympathy for him.
Old Major- Old Major was Mr. Jones’ prize boar. He was very intelligent, well-respected by the
animals on the farm, an excellent speaker as well as an inspiration to the animals as he inspired
the rebellion and encouraged the animals to stand up for themselves. He also taught the animals
“Beasts of England”. Additionally, the rules of ‘Animalism’ were created based on his speech
which he delivered 3 days before his death.
Bluebell, Jessie, and Pincher- Bluebell and Jessie are the parents of the nine puppies taken by
Napoleon which he raised in secret as his secret army.
Boxer- Boxer was an extremely strong and hard working horse. He is not an intelligent animal as
seen when he could not learn any of the alphabet past the letter D. Nevertheless, he always did
his best to help others and had his own motto "I will work harder." Furthermore, due to his low
level of intelligence, he was easily manipulated by Napoleon and Squealer as shown when he
began saying "Napoleon is always right."
Clover - Clover is a motherly, middle aged cart horse. Her qualities are similar to Boxer’s as she
too gives into Squealer’s and Napoleon’s speeches due to her inability to think for herself.
Muriel- Muriel is a white goat. She is one of the few animals to become fully literate.
Benjamin- Benjamin was a bitter elderly donkey. He was the oldest on the farm and the worst
tempered. He rarely ever spoke, just observed what was going on. However, Benjamin seemed to
have been very wise as he seemed to have understood what was really going on. Additionally, he
did not side with either faction when Snowball and Napoleon when they were in disagreement
about the windmill and said “Windmill or no windmill, he said, life would go on as it had always
gone on – that is, badly.”
Mollie- Mollie was a self absorbed mare who only cared about herself.Mollie did not understand
or perhaps just did not care about the true purpose of the rebellion, and asked questions such as if
there would still be sugar after the rebellion. Additionally, she was only quite lazy and never
wanted to do work and always had excuses. She was also a coward because when Mr. Jones
came back to try and recapture the farm, Mollie did not help the other animals protect the farm
and disappeared. Furthermore, when Mollie was confronted about being seen letting a man
stroke her nose she lied and said it was true but the sugar cubes and colorful ribbons found in her
stall suggested otherwise. She disappeared three days later and appeared to have found herself a
new owner as she was all decked up between the shafts of a dog cart and seemed to be enjoying
herself.
Moses- Moses was Mr. Jones’s special pet, a tame raven. He was a spy, a tale-bearer but a clever
talker. He tried to keep the animals motivated with tales of an afterlife in Sugarcandy Mountain
which is the place that animals go when they die to reap their rewards from their work on the
farm.
Snowball- Snowball was a young intelligent and creative boar. He was well-spoken and cared
about the other animals on the farm greatly as he taught some to read and write and he came up
with the idea of the windmill to improve the animals lifestyle and well being.
Napoleon- Napoleon was a young but large, fierce-looking Berkshire boar, the only Berkshire on
the farm. He was not much of a talker, but had a reputation for getting his own way. Napoleon
never contributed to the rebellion for the good of the farm but for himself as he wanted to have
the luxury and power as shown when his first action was to steal the cows' milk for the pigs as
soon as the revolution was successfully carried out. Additionally, we can see that he did not truly
take the nine puppies to “educate” them but to raise them to be his own private army to be by his
side so that he can induce fear in order to get his own way.
Squealer- Squealer was a very persuasive pig. He informed the animals of information sent by
Napoleon, most of the time he twisted the information to suit the major point. This can be seen
when he talks about how the consumption of milk and apples by the pigs is for the animals' own
good. He even goes as far as threatening that Mr. Jones’ will come back if all the milk and apples
are not left for the pigs alone.
The Sheep- Some of the least intelligent animals on Animal Farm. They never become fully
literate and can't remember the Seven Commandments, but Snowball teaches them the maxim
“Four legs good, two legs bad,” which they love and bleat all the time. They're receptive to
propaganda and follow orders without questioning anything.
The Cat- The cat is greedy and only cares about her needs. She’s only interested in participating
in the rebellion when there is no danger involved and if it benefits her one way or the other as
shown when she joined the “Re-education Committee” only to try and trick some sparrows so
she can capture them.
Mr. Pilkington - Mr. Pilkington was the owner of Foxwood Farm and
Summary of Chapter 1
After Mr. Jones went to sleep, all the animals gathered together in the barn to hear about old
Major’s recent dream. Firsty, he informs everyone that he may die soon so he must share his
wisdom with them. In the beginning of the speech, he reminds the animals of how they are ill
treated, enslaved and when they are slaughtered when they are no longer of use. Additionally, he
proposed a solution, if they get rid of man they can live freely. Furthermore, he shows how
selfish man is because all they do is take from the animals, their young ones, their milk, their
labor and only give back enough to prevent them from starving. Then he reminds them once
again that all they have to do is get rid of man then they can live comfortably and freely.
However, old Major states that when they do succeed with their rebellion against man they must
not follow their ways such as living in a house, sleeping in a bed, wearing clothes, drinking
alcohol, smoking tobacco, dealing with money and engaging in trade for “All the habits of Man
are evil”. Finally, old Major tells the animals about his dream. His dream was about how the
earth will be once man has vanished. He said that this dream reminded him of a song called
“Beasts of England”. After he sang “Beasts of England” all the other animals sung it together
multiple times which soon awoke Mr. Jones. The animals hurriedly went to sleep after multiple
gunshots were fired at the barn.
Three Nights after the meeting, old Major died in his sleep (Early in March). Some of the
animals started to think about preparing for the future rebellion. Additionally, Snowball,
Napoleon and Squealer enforced the principles of “Animalism” which was based on old Major’s
teachings and discussed it during the meetings. June came and the animals finally decided to take
matters into their own hands as they were underfed and neglected by Mr. Jones and his men. The
hungry animals broke into the store-shed that helped themselves then Mr. Jones and his men
lashed out at the animals with their whips but the animals fought back causing Jones and his men
to flee. The animals destroyed all the gears from the harness room and rejoiced. After the
animals carefully inspected the house, they agreed that no animals should ever live there.
Furthermore, Snowball painted the words “Animal Farm” over “Manor Farm” and the “seven
commandments”.
Summary of Chapter 3-
Most of the animals worked to get the hay in while the pigs merely supervised. Boxer was very
helpful and always went the extra mile to get the work done while Mollie and the cat showed no
interest and always made up excuses. Snowballs organized various animal committees but
Napoleon was not very fond of these committees as he believed education for the young was
more essential than educating grown animals. Additionally, because some animals were unable
to learn the seven commandments by heart, Snowball decided to simplify the Commandments to,
“Four legs good, two legs bad.” Napoleon took Jessie and Bluebell’s pups to a sequestered area
after they were weaned, saying that he would take it upon himself to educate the pups. The pigs
deceived the animals, Squaler spoke on the pig’s behalf claiming that they need the milk and
apples for the benefit of their brain power and that many of them actually dislike milk and apples
but they consume it to prevent Mr.Jones from returning.
Summary of Chapter 4-
By late summer, half the country including other farms were aware of the rebellion at Animal
Farm. Furthermore, Mr. Pilkington, owner of the “Foxwood” farm and Mr. Frederick, owner of
the “Pinchfield” farm, was terribly afraid that the animals of their farms would follow the
rebellious activities which occurred at the Manor Farm and even made up roomers of unpleasant
occurrences at Manor Farm. Throughout that year, many animals rebelled against man and more
knew the words of “Beasts of England.” Mr. Jones and men from Pinchfield and Foxwood
attempted to recapture the farm in early October. Of course they failed because Snowball was
readily prepared, though one sheep died. Snowball and Boxer were given “Animal Hero, First
Class” and the dead sheep, “Animal Hero, Second Class”.The battle was named “Battle of the
Cowshed” and was agreed upon that it would be something of a Historical Importance to the
animals as they decided to keep Mr.Jones' gun as a souvenir and fire it twice a year.
Mollie eventually left the farm with no warning after being confronted by Clover about her
betrayal and it was reported that she seemed to be enjoying herself where she disappeared to.
Snowball and Napoleon were always in disagreement, Snowball pitched a plan concerning the
construction of a windmill to supply electrical power which will make work easier and living
more comfortable. Surely Napoleon was against the idea of the mindmill and tried to convince
the animals to not be a part of it.Snowball’s speech about the benefits of the windmill was very
convincing but before the animals could vote, Napoleon signaled an attack against Snowball.
The dogs that Napoleon was secretly training chased Snowball out of the farm. With Snowball
gone and nine fierce dogs by his side, Napoleon was now in a position of power and he firstly
made a few announcements concerning meetings and working orders, these speeches seemed as
though the animals had no say in anything as shown when the porkers tried to speak up, but then
they were silenced by the vicious dogs. Lastly, Napoleon suddenly decided to reinstitute the
windmill project and Squealer explained to the animals that Napoleon had never been against the
idea of the windmill but just made it seem as though he did in order to get rid of Snowball. The
animals were forced to accept this and asked no questions due to their fear of the dogs.
Exploitation- The animals are exploited by the Pigs meaning that they are overworked by the
pigs which only take and take.
Deception- The animals are continuously deceived by the pigs, specifically Squealer who doesn't
tell the whole truth of the situation to the animals for the benefit of the pigs.
Corruption- The animals are told lies to keep them working while the pigs alone benefit.
Tyranny- Tyranny occurs where the animals are oppressed by the pigs overworking them and the
animals are afraid to speak up due to Napoleon’s private army of dogs and even if they do
manage to speak up they are killed.
False Allegiance- The pigs pretend to have the animals best interests at heart when in reality they
are only looking out for themselves and using the animals.
1. Boxer and Mollie- Boxer and Mollie had quite different qualities. While Boxer was very
hard working and looked out for others, Mollie only cared about herself and she was lazy
as she never did work and always had excuses. One similarity between these two would
be their lack of intelligence as they were horses and incapable of understanding some
topics. For instance, Mollie never understood the true meaning of the rebellion similarly
to Boxer not understanding Napoleon’s true intentions and going along with whatever
was said.
2. Snowball and Napoleon- Snowball and Napoleon have various different qualities. While
Snowball cares about the education of all the animals on the farm, Napoleon believes that
education of the young is more important and that the education of those already grown is
not beneficial. Both are similar because they are creative and intelligent.
