17BT2102: Process engineering Principles

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 100

(Assume any missing data suitably and design adequate hypothesis, if required)
Part-A (8 X 5M=40M)
Answer ALL Questions BTL-2
1. Illustrate substantial and natural variables with examples.
2. Interpret the definition of unit, dimension and conversion factor with
example.
3. A sample of gas having volume of 0.5m3 is compressed in such a manner, so that
pressure is increased by 60%. The operation is done for fixed mass of a gas at constant
temperature. Calculate the final volume of the gas.

4. Represent the Compressibility factor equation with proper units and its
significance.
5. Draw the block diagram and also mention each stream coming in and out of the
Evaporation process.
6. Mention the definition of Limiting reactant and Excess reactant with example
7. Recall the definition of Potential energy with neat diagram. A box has a mass of
5.8.The box is lifted from the garage floor and place on a shelf. If the box gains 145J of
potential energy. How high is the shelf.
8. State law of conservation of mass and law of conservation of energy.
Part-B (4 X 10M=40M)
Answer Question No. 9 and ANY Three from other 4 Questions
BTL-2
9. A solution of Caustic soda solution contains 30% of NaOH by weight. Taking
density of solution as 1.967Kg/L. calculate normality, Molarity and molality of
a given solution.

Taking a gas mixture containing 0.274kmol of HCl, 0.337Kmol of N2 and

0.089kmol O2. Calculate i) Average molecular weight of gas ii) Volume
Occupied by mixture at 405.3KPa Pressure and Temperature 303K.
10. Determine the following
i) Find the molecular weight i) H2SO4 ii)Na2CO3 iii)KMnO4 iv) Cu SO4
ii) Find moles of K2CO3 that will contain 117Kg of K
iii) Find how many kilograms of carbon are present in 64kg of Methane

11. Describe critical temperature, critical pressure and critical volume.

Find the pressure using vanderwaals equation of state for carbon dioxide
weighing 1.10kg occupies a volume of 0.033 m3 at 300K; where, a= 3.60
(m3)2.kPa/(kmol)2and b=4.3x102(m3) .(kmol)

12. Soyabean seeds are extracted with hexane in batch extractors. The flaked seeds are
found to contain 18.6% oil, 69% solid and 12.4% moisture (by weight). At the end of
the extraction process, cake (meal) is separated from hexane-oil mixture. The cake is
analyzed to contain 0.8% oil, 87.7% solids and 11.5% moisture (by weight). Find the
percentage recovery of oil.
13. Exemplify a detail note on i)Heat ii)work iii) Hess law with example and neat diagram

Part-C (1 X 20M=20M)

BTL-3
14. Determine the following
i) Sodium chloride weighing 200 kg is mixed with 600kg of potassium chloride.
Calculate the composition of mixture in (i) Weight % and ii) mole %

ii) A certain sample of gas at a pressure of 102.65KPa pressure is

expanded so that its Volume is increased by 40%. The operation is done
for a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature. Calculate the final
pressureP2kPa of the gas.Take Initial pressure be P1kPa.
iii) A sample of gas having volume of 1 m3 is compressed to half of its
original volume in such a manner, so that pressure is increased by 60%.
The operation is done for fixed mass of a gas at constant temperature.
Calculate the % Increase in pressure of the gas.
15. Solve the following
i) Water at 250C enters an open heating reactor at a rate of 10kgh-1.Liquid water
leaves the tank at 880C at a rate of 9 kg h-1 and 1 kg/h water vapour is lost from
the system through evaporation. At steady state what is the rate of heat input of
the system, if h value for liquid is 368.5KJ/kg, saturated stream is 2656.9 KJ/Kg
and liquid water is 104.8 KJ/Kg
ii) Corn-steep liquor contains 4.5 % invert sugars and 50% water; the rest can be
considered solids. Beet molasses containing 70% sucrose, 3% invert sugars, 26%
water and the remainder solids is mixed with corn-steep liquor in a mixing tank.
Water is added to produce a diluted sugar mixture containing 3.5% (w/w) invert
sugars. 35 kg corn-steep liquor and 65 kg molasses are fed into the tank.
(a) How much water is required?
(b) What is the concentration of sucrose in the final mixture?
