Hypocritical fashion

While I (1) _____________________ (search) online for a sustainable clothing company, I
found the company Our Earth. I decided to buy a T-shirt from them with the slogan ‘Save the
planet … Save humanity.’ The company’s T-shirts (2) _____________________ (promote) as
being environmentally friendly. Also, 20% of the proceeds were supposed to go to wildlife
charities.
When the T-shirt arrived, I looked at the label. It (3) ____________________ (make) from
polyester, a fabric derived from oil! Not only does polyester manufacturing create a lot of
pollution, but also every time you wash it, it releases microplastics into the water. I (4)
____________________ (not feel) so angry in a long time. I didn’t know what (5)
____________________ (do). To make matters worse, the ‘charity’ had nothing to do with
protecting wildlife. Instead, most of the proceeds from their products go to offering scholarships
for business students!
I can’t help but wonder how the marketing team of the company messed this up so badly. What
(6) ____________________ they____________________ (think)? Did they suppose that no one
would notice?
Finally, I decided to do some research. I found out who (7) ____________________ (call) at the
company to lodge a complaint. The Customer Service Manager offered to return my money, then
asked, ‘(8) ____________________ your complaint ____________________ (resolve)?’
Obviously, I said that it wasn’t, since their products were still available online. That’s why I’m
writing this publicly. Do NOT shop at Our Earth!

The impact of my fashion choices

Recently, I bought a dress from a type of fabric called viscose. It feels a

lot like silk, and I absolutely loved the way it looked. That is … until I
found out how environmentally damaging viscose can be. It is very 1 ___________________
frustrating that buy something, and then find out you are contributing
to the harm of endangered species. In my opinion, it is unethical me to 2 ___________________
wear fabrics that affect these species.

Viscose is made from cellulose, coming from plants. It is light and soft
wearing. That’s why it’s so popular in the fashion world. 3 ___________________

The source of viscose difficult to trace, since numerous countries 4 ___________________

produce it. However, a good deal of viscose is manufactured in Sumatra
in Indonesia. Sadly, in this region, old-growth rainforest is often cut
down to make fibre for the fabric. A lot of companies call viscose a
sustainable fabric because it comes from plants, but they is wrong of 5 ___________________
them to say so. It takes old-growth forests hundreds of years to
regenerate.
6 ___________________
It is horribly to hear about the effects of this practice on endangered
animals. Sumatran orangutans and Sumatran tigers are two species that 7 ___________________
suffer the effects of deforestation. It is not always easy of us to avoid 8 ___________________
unsustainable fabrics. It takes a lot of careful research. Even then, is still
impossible for us to know all the details. From now on, I will only buy
clothes from companies with good environmental reputations. Even 9 ___________________
though the clothing may cost more, I find it reassuring to my decisions
aren’t harming beautiful animals.
